Tomorrow is Mother’s Day, an opportunity for Americans, regardless of their faith or beliefs, to show appreciation for mothers.

All three Abrahamic faiths — Islam, Christianity and Judaism — recognize the importance of mothers from their faith perspectives.

Islam takes it a step further, by classifying duty to mothers and treating them with kindness as an act of worship.

It may surprise many that the most honored mother in Islam is Mary, the mother of Jesus.

God says: “And (mention) when the angels said, ‘O Mary, indeed God has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.’ ” (Quran 3:42)

Mentioned 34 times in the Quran, she is given the most attention of any woman.

  1. All three faiths are spiritual and largely a great biological family- Family of Abraham and they all deserve equal respect and rights’

  2. In the Abrahamic faiths there is also metaphor of God being more loving towards humanity than their parents. In the Bible there is mention of God being a father in a metaphorical sense and there is Hadith of the Holy Prophet Muhammad saying that God is more loving than a mother. The Arabic word for uterus shares its root with the words describing God’s attributes of Al Rahman and Al Raheem, meaning the Gracious and the Most Merciful!
