On December 16th, 2014, 140 students between the ages of 5 and 17 were massacred by the Pakistani Taliban (TTP). The killing of children, justified by no means, highlights the atrocities faced by regular Pakistanis on a daily basis. This is nowhere more present than for the country’s minority groups.
In May last year, Dr.Mehdi Ali Qamar, a cardiologist, was shot and killed while on a volunteer mission to the country simply because of his faith as an Ahmadi Muslim. Moreover, international humanitarian groups and advocacy networks have condemned Pakistan, a country where blasphemy laws are a tool used against minority groups to settle personal disputes.
However, the widespread despair of the country, the most recent attacks on innocent children and the overall track record of Pakistan is a consequence of its loss of innocence and respect for human life. In order to understand how 140 children can be utilized in sending a message to the military leaders of the country, one must grasp this reality.
Simply put: some Pakistanis have become desensitized to a point where human life has lost meaning in the country.
