In Pakistan any one repeating the words ‘There is no God but Allah and Mohammad (sas) is His prophet’ is an Ahmad-Muslim. In Pakistan you only qualify as ‘Constitution approve’ Muslim if you add ‘and I do not believe in Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as)’.
Muslim is some one who submits himself to the will of God Almighty, as explained in the Quran: Islam is based on five things:
1. Kalimah: He recites the Kalimah that there is no God except Allah and Muhammad is his messenger.
That is an important part of the belief to enter Islam.
2. Salaat: He prays (salaat) daily to Allah.
3. Zakaat: He pays the poor money (Zakaat), to help the poor people.
4. Saum: He fasts in the month of Ramadhan.
5. Hajj: He performs Hajj once in lifetime if conditions allow.
No one can amend the words of the Kalimah i.e. to add the words that Muhammad is the last prophet. If I was allowed, I would add that a Muslim is a completely peaceful non-violent person. His station is well above a mere believer (Momin), because a Muslim, after declaring his belief (Kalimah) will have done most of the other necessary basis of Islam and presented himself before Allah as a peaceful worshipping person.
We, as many of us roam around, declaring ourselves as Muslims are not in fact real Muslims because many of us do not even offer five daily prayers.
Allah has given us the name “Muslim” and it is intended that we will prove ourselves as Muslims submitting to the will of Allah.
Name is always given of higher standard so we were named Muslims. But are we really Muslims? Surely, we can be called believers (Momineen) only as we subscribe to the Kalimah tayyabah. A Muslim has to be a Momin first before submitting himself to Allah. Eimaan is the first step for becoming a Muslim.
Even the meaning of the Arabic words tell us that Momin is every believer. Muslim is a one who, with his Eimaan, acts righteously and submits himself to the Will of Allah. ( I could not watch the video).
Brother sarwar, I have a different take on that issue. I think anybody who says that he is a Muslim is a muslim de-facto, even if he is not a believer…so to speak. To be a muslim is simple but to be a momin is a challenge. Once somebody has made a verbal declaration that he is a “muslim”, the next step is to start his journey to become a momin..i.e going from aslamna to amanna.
