As the second pillar of Islam, Muslims are required to pray 5 times a day at certain times.
(HEBRON, KY) – On 9 October, 24 Muslims employees of DHL lost their jobs in Hebron, Kentucky, after DHL supervisors reversed a policy of flexible break times that allowed Muslim employees time to pray.
11 complaints have since been filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging that DHL Global Mail breached their legally protected religious rights.
Muslim civil rights group CAIR attorney Booker Washington said “We are requesting all available remedies allowed under Title VII (of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964) and the Kentucky Civil Rights Act, including but not limited to: damages, reinstatement where appropriate and policy changes to ensure that all worker’s civil rights are respected.”

We must acknowledge that there are situations in the workplace where some workers cannot just ‘walk off the job’, however, we do not know in the above case whether prior to firing there was an attempt to find a peaceful and workable solution to this challenge. Muslim prayers can be somewhat flexible and with good intentions on both sides a solution should have been found.
That is right. If more than one employee goes off work, it may affect the company. The Muslims may require time for prayers and they may press ahead for congragational prayers, which may not be possible for the company.
Otherwise, prayer does not require much time. The employees also have to behave not to unduely prolong their prayers.
If the company gives them time for prayers, they (Muslim employees) should return the favor by showing more efficiency on job.
If company does not allow time for prayers, the employees should not press too much. They should perform their prayers at home during off hours and may combine some prayers. There are so many ways to settle the matter amicably.
Media makes mockery of incidents. One should wait the response of company. At the end fault likely to be of Muslims. DHL is a responsible company.
