Rowley Regis charity sports day (organised by Halesowen Ahmadiyya Muslim Association) to kick off on Sunday

A SPORTS day which hopes to net hundreds of pounds for charity is due to kick off in a Rowley Regis park on Sunday.

The event will feature a series of football and volleyball games at Britannia Park to help a former Leasowes High School pupil smash his £1,000 goal for his Raleigh International mission to Tanzania.

Proceeds from the sports day, organised by the Halesowen-based Ahmadiyya Muslim Association, will be shared with the Royal British Legion.

Matthew Millership, aged 21, has already raised £800 and will spend 10 weeks in Tanzania later this year helping to tackle poverty.

He will be volunteering on a project to improve access to clean water, improve sanitation and education in remote villages, as well as working towards enabling a sustainable way of living, involving the use and recycling of natural resources.

Event chairman Adil Anjum said: “We have been organising this event for the past four years and have raised thousands of pounds with the help of local police and members of charities such as the Royal British Legion, Acorns and Macmillan Cancer Support to name but a few.
