A Poem for July 4th: My Adopted Country

By Dr. Jariullah Khan, Dallas, TX

A country has adopted me and I have adopted her

When millions of my Ahmadi brothers and sisters are suffering back home

My adopted country has raised voice for them

When there is tsunami in Far East

When there is earthquake in mountainous regions of my motherland

Or in open seas in Haiti

My adopted land’s helicopters and planes were found flying

Helping people in need, people in fear,

When dictators rule their lands

When oppressors oppress the human rights,

When kings and ruthless rulers kill their very own people

My adopted country is there to protect them

From the wrath of their oppressors

Freedom of religion and conscience is her goal

Throughout the world.

People of my adopted country embraced me and many others

With open arms and open minds

My adopted country has come a long way

From George Washington to Abraham Lincoln to JFK to MLK to Rosa Park to Reagan to Obama

And Clinton is there too working for better of the poor and the needy

These are the faces of my country that I am proud of

Whether black or brown or white or Christian or Jew or Muslim or any religion or no religion

It is Equal for all, love for all, hatred for none

Now having felt the freedom of religion and speech

Freedom of conscience and thought and right to vote openly

on this 4th of July, I would like the whole world become United States of Freedom

Like United Stated of America

The poem is also published by Dallas News.

  1. Wonderful expression about this great country- our homeland. Can any Urdu poet compose his/her feelings about our homeland – America, at this occasion of 4th of July celebrations.

  3. Thank you brother, for a truly heartfelt delivery of this poetic rendition. When I think of all the oppressed people of the world, I feel so blessed to be a U.S. citizen, may the whole world follow its example.

4th of July United States of America Independence Day
Translation of the Urdu Poem By: Sherali Khan Basharat Virginia
Oh the land of USA, Oh my dear homeland
I chose you to be my residence
Though I was born in another country,
You kindly embraced me with love and affection
I shall sacrifice my life for thy sake
    I shall destroy your enemies
May Allah protect you at all times
Never see a bad day and may my garden bloom forever
The red, white, and blue colors of thy flag
The shining stars, are symbols of national unity
By God my heart desires to rush, grab, and hug it
When it waves, my heart joyfully swings with it
When I see the blessings of Allah shower over you,
My innocent heart imagines this could be the foothills of heavens
I wondered what I could present to you on this day
Then I thought the message of peace from Mohammad is the best
I have already pledged my loyalty towards you
However, it further strengthens when I heard “the love of homeland is part of faith.” *
I am ignorant of the intricacies of poetry
I just wanted to praise you on this day
    * Saying of Prophet Mohammad may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
