Palestine: Simple suggestion put forward

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has a good suggestion to break the impasse in the stalled Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, one that is simple and straightforward.

He wants Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to draw a roadmap for the two-state solution that he has rhetorically accepted but in whose path he has put all sorts of hurdles.

Since Israelis have rejected everything the Palestinians have come up with to bridge the gap between them, it is high time that Netanyahu came up with a roadmap of his own for the two-state solution.

It would show some goodwill and it would definitely give an inkling into the Israeli prime minister’s thinking on the issue.

Abbas came up with his idea on the eve of US Secretary of State John Kerry’s visit to the region, which begins with the West Bank.

It will be interesting to see how Israel plans to solve its problem with the Palestinians, what exactly it wants to present to its neighbours, the US and the international community, which has only heard about Israel’s “offers” and “overtures”, but saw no concrete action except, of course, the subjugation, imprisonment, killing and dispossession of the Palestinians.

Too much time had been wasted without anything to show for by way of peace between the two sides.

It is time Israel got specific about how it plans to work towards an agreement with the Palestinians, for the whole world to take note of and draw the proper conclusions from it.

The US secretary of state must have some broad ideas on how to relaunch the bogged peace process — or what’s left of it. He, and the international community at large, must surely want to hear specifics, particularly from Israel, which has always placed the onus on the Palestinians.

It will be interesting to see the plans the Israeli prime minister has, if any, and to finally have a definitive, clear picture of a very hazy situation.
