UK: Spy chief warns of dangers in ability to monitor terror suspects

Terrorists could be slipping through the net because of the spy agencies inability to monitor modern communications, the head of MI5 has warned.

Jonathan Evans, the Director General of MI5, said it was increasingly difficult to be confident that targets were being fully watched.

His comments come amid a row over Government plans to allow the police, security and intelligence agencies the power to monitor every email, phone call and web visit. The Coalition has been split over the plans with tension between Theresa May, the Home Secretary, and Nick Clegg, the deputy Prime Minister, who believes the proposals go too far.

The parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) today supported the proposals but said the government must do more to convince public of the need for them.
