A Brampton mosque is recognizing the sacrifices of Indigenous, Muslim and other soldiers who served Canada with a ceremony and flyover on Nov. 8.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Canada’s National Indigenous Veterans Day & Muslims for Remembrance event will be held at its Brampton Mubarak Mosque and open to the public. The event will run from 1:30 to 3:15 p.m.

The ceremony will feature a recitation of “In Flanders Fields” and The Act of Remembrance, a bugle performance of “The Last Post” and a wreath ceremony. It will also feature a smudge ceremony, according to a poster for the event.

Before the wreath ceremony, replica First World War planes from the Great War Flying Museum located at the Brampton Caledon airport are planned to fly over Mubarak Mosque, serving as “a symbolic tribute to those who served and sacrificed their lives for Canada,” Ahmadiyya Brampton said via email. The flyover is subject to weather conditions.

The event will “honour and recognize the service, courage and sacrifices of Indigenous veterans, Muslim soldiers and all those who have served Canada,” the email said.

“Everyone is welcome to attend.”

Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Canada launched the Muslims for Remembrance campaign in 2011. The initiative honours the sacrifices of Canadian Armed Forces members and veterans and “promotes remembrance, gratitude, peace, and community engagement,” Ahmadiyya Brampton said.

The group also raises funds for veterans at its Friday prayers leading up to Remembrance Day.

Indigenous Veterans Day has been recognized on Nov. 8 in Canada since 1994 and is part of Veterans Week, which runs from Nov. 5 to 11.
