Medina: Saudis take a bulldozer to Islam’s history

Three of the world’s oldest mosques are about to be destroyed as Saudi Arabia embarks on a multi-billion-pound expansion of Islam’s second holiest site. Work on the Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina, where the Prophet Mohamed is buried, will start once the annual Hajj pilgrimage ends next month. When complete, the development will turn the mosque into the world’s largest building, with the capacity for 1.6 million worshippers.

But concerns have been raised that the development will see key historic sites bulldozed. Anger is already growing at the kingdom’s apparent disdain for preserving the historical and archaeological heritage of the country’s holiest city, Mecca.

  1. During the planned expansion of Masjid e Nabwi, will “the tombs of Islam’s founder and two of his closest companions, Abu Bakr and Umar.” be safe? Can some of informed persons let us know bit of the details?

  2. @ Muhammad Ayyub
    Probably not.

Architecture is not just about designing and building, it takes care of preserving old, prestigious, historical and monumental as well.
Good architects are able to expand and yet preserve everything which is sacred and dear and near to every ones heart

  3. If they destroy the prophet tomb and grave many mosque(massijide zarrar) of wahabis will be destroved in reaction.also think what is use of minarets on mosque and wall of QABA in ibadat.

  4. I believe it is only the expansion of the Masjid and nothing to do with the destruction of the original structure. Do not even dare to touch the tombs of the holy prophet and his companions else there is nothing that can save us from the wrath of Allah…please do not let our deeds become the cause of our misfortune and deprivation of Allah’s Mercy…
