Notorious Terry Jones

Canadian border officials turned away the U.S. pastor behind “International Burn a Koran Day,” only hours before he was due to speak at a event in Toronto.

Terry Jones was searched and questioned for more than four hours at the Detroit-Windsor border before being told he would not be admitted to Canada.

“We were definitely disappointed and we were surprised,” Mr. Jones told the National Post in a phone interview.

He said he would “possibly” try to enter Canada again.

“We will see.

During the search, the Canada Border Services Agency examined Mr. Jones’ computer and cell phone, as well as two signs that read: “Islam is the New Nazism:; and “Koran Burning site.”

The CBSA then gave Mr. Jones and his assistant Wayne Sapp letters.

“Dr. Jones’ letter said they were denying him entry to Canada because years ago in Germany, when he lived there, he was fined by the German government for using the title doctor,” said Fran Ingram of Stand Up America Now, the U.S. organization that promotes Mr. Jones.

The letter also told Mr. Jones he was required to provide a criminal records check before entering Canada.

“I think it’s a very sad day for free speech,” Allan Einstoss, who had invited the controversial pastor to debate the amateurish anti-Muslim video that sparked worldwide protests last month.

The Canada Border Services Agency declined to comment directly on the case.

“Admissibility of all travelers seeking to enter Canada is considered on a case-by-case basis based on the specific facts presented by the applicant at the time of entry,” the agency said in a written statement.

“Every person seeking entry to Canada must demonstrate that they meet the requirements to enter and/or stay in Canada. The CBSA is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all Canadians while facilitating legitimate travel and trade.”

Jones was slated to take part in a multifaith debate on free speech in front of the Ontario legislature tonight.
