Over 75 journalists have been killed so far this year. According to a recent report by the International News Safety Institute, INSI, it has been one of the bloodiest periods in recent times.
The deadliest country for journalists and media workers is Syria. At least 19 news media casualties have been recorded since the beginning of the year. Many more journalists have been injured, detained and threatened. The next worst countries are Nigeria, Brazil, Somalia, Indonesia and Mexico.
The actual number of casualties may be even higher because INSI has recorded the deaths of 30 more news people, but it is unclear if these were linked to their work.
