The moon is more important than the sun – or: was Mullah Nasruddin a Pakistani?

The news that Pakistani scientists invented the ‘water-driven-car’ (or was it the ‘Islamic car’?) makes me wonder whether Mullah Nasruddin was a Pakistani, because the Mullahs stated:

One day Mullah Nasruddin entered his favorite teahouse and said: ‘The moon is more useful than the sun’. An old man asked ‘Why mulla?’ Nasruddin replied ‘We need the light more during the night than during the day.’

  1. Mulla Nasrudin was bragging about his rich friends. I have one friend who saves five hundred
    dollars a day,he said.
What does he do, Mulla? asked a listener. How does he save five hundred dollars a day?
Every morning when he goes to work, he goes in the subway, said Nasrudin. You know in the
subway, there is a five-hundred dollar fine if you spit, SO, HE DOESNT SPIT!

    • Well, that is exactly how the politicians save money! You read that ‘Greece is reducing their budget’: exactly in Mull Nasrudin’s way. (By the way, this is of course a ‘fake’ Mulla Nasruddin joke, as there were no subways during his time).

  2. Here’s another reason why the moon is more important than the sun: The moon is made of blue cheese and cheese (ah cheese) can be eaten! (I was born in the part of India which is now Pakistani. So, who knows, your guess may well be right!)

About the water car whatever, I will say this. Bertrand Russell, in one of his books, described the difference between the Greek and Arab approaches to science by saying that if the problem were to decide how many teeth a horse had, the Greeks would sit there and try to reason out the teeth the horse could have/must have. An Arab, on the other hand, would go into the stable and count the horse’s teeth. (The wording is mine. I read most of my Russell during my College days at Talim-ul-Islam College Rabwah and donated my collection, which I had got as various prizes, to the library when I graduated. Now, as memory is fading, I miss them!)

  3. Here’s an interesting four year old video. (No word since about the H_2O driven Japanese car!)

Please watch it and ask, “Was Mulla Nasruddin Japanese?”
The Japs had at least the courtesy to show what they were supposed to be doing.” This is what one part of my comment was related to.
For the other part let me tell you a true story. When in London as a student I got into the bad company of some Pakistani politicos, because of my utter dislike for ZA Bhutto (circa 1972). They had some liaison with a Hindu pseudo philosopher. One day I went along with the politicos to see him. I do not know what got into the Hindu fellow, after a few niceties he almost abruptly with: “I do not want to hurt anyone’s feeling but” and used an abusive phrase for Muhammad Ali Jinnah. It sounded odd to me (I do not get easily hurt) but it sort of annoyed me. So in response I said, “I too hope that I do not hurt anyone’s feeling but” and repeated the same abuse for all the Indian leaders, whose names I knew, one by one.
My point is pre-apologizing for a slur does not absolve you of the sin of being insensitive.
