On Sunday evening, the city of Ahmedabad paid tribute to Vasantrao Hegishte and Rajab Ali Lakhani who died saving others during a communal flare-up in 1946 Rath Yatra. NGOs Anhad, Sauhard and Action Aid had organised a cultural event on the occasion. The venue, a small auditorium at Ahimsa Shodh Bhawan, Gujarat Vidyapeeth, was jam-packed.
Shabnam Hashmi, founder of Anhad, said, “This year we wanted to target the youth. That is why we chose two youth icons- Imaad Shah and Saba Azad. Also many students from Xaviers college were involved.”
The first half of the evening had several performances, including those by Farheen Raaj, Meet Jani, Prince Christian, Priya Christian, Sauhard Theatre Group and Shabdum band. The theatre group performed a street play based on a play written by Saumya Joshi. The message was simple—unity between the two communities. It was wrapped up by the Shabdum band amid loud cheers, especially for the two lead singers.
After singing three raagas, the band decided to pay a tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in their blend of three Sufi songs. The second half saw Imaad Shah perform with Saba Azad and Anand Bhagat, a renowned percussionist from Mumbai. They sang four protest songs, which highlighted the importance of lyrics. Their performance was followed by a short open interaction.
actually I do not understand the ‘ping back’ thing…
