Saudi Arabia: Al-Obaikan relieved of Royal Court post

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has issued a royal decree relieving Sheikh Abdul Muhsin Al-Obaikan, adviser to the Royal Court, of his post.

Sheikh Al-Obaikan, a prominent Islamic scholar, was controversial for some of his religious edicts (fatwas), including the one about breastfeeding of foreign drivers by Saudi women. He also launched an outspoken attack on judges for handing out “excessive prison and lashing sentences.”

Sheikh Al-Obaikan had earlier been stopped from presenting his daily morning radio show after King Abdullah restricted the issuance of fatwas to certain scholars.

Under a royal decree, only members of the Council of Senior Islamic Scholars can issue fatwas.
