AMMAN — Dozens of Islamists on Saturday gathered outside the gates of the Islamic Charity Centre Society (ICCS) after a deal with the government to return the administration of the largest nonprofit organisation in the Kingdom to the Muslim Brotherhood fell through.

During yesterday’s event, the protesters called on the government to follow through on the deal and return control of the society to the Muslim Brotherhood, the Kingdom’s largest opposition group, threatening to hold weekly demonstrations until their demands are met.

According to Islamist leaders, the government was planning to appoint Abdul Latif Arabiyat, president of the Muslim Brotherhood’s shura council, as chairman of the ad hoc committee managing the ICCS, which comprises a hospital, several schools and other components that serve local communities across the Kingdom.

In 2005, the government dismantled the board of the society, citing alleged financial irregularities, and appointed a temporary administration to run the affairs of the multi-million-JD organisation.
