Sharjah’s Russian Orthodox Church a testament to UAE’s tolerance

The 1,800-sqm complex was constructed on land donated by Sharjah ruler Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi. Located in the Yarmouk area, the complex is the biggest church beyond the border of CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States).

“The St. Philip Apostle Orthodox Church reflects the religious harmony of Sharjah,” said Ahmed, an Emirati. “I have read countless reports in the European press arguing against the construction of mosques with minarets but in Sharjah we are tolerant of different faiths and places of worship.”

  1. Genuine Muslims should not have any problems with Churches or other places of worship. The Holy Quran actually says that true Muslims should be defending Churches and Synagogues:

Permission to fight is given to those against whom war is made, because they have been wronged — and Allah indeed has power to help them — Those who have been driven out from their homes unjustly only because they said, ‘Our Lord is Allah’ — And if Allah did not repel some men by means of others, there would surely have been pulled down cloisters and churches and synagogues and mosques, wherein the name of Allah is oft commemorated. And Allah will surely help one who helps Him. Allah is indeed Powerful, Mighty. (Al Quran 22:40-41)
