BBC Video: Ramadan in Iceland: Would Two Hour Fast in December be a Joke?

Epigraph:

O ye who believe! fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become righteous. (Al Quran 2:183/184)

The Quran Only Means What Our Wisdom and Intentions Dictate

The Muslim Times’ Chief Editor’s comments:

The piety of some Muslims living in Iceland is telling them to keep the fast, even when it is as long as 22 hours, may be they can take it, but they are making Islam impractical for many others.  What would their opinion be when the fast comes around in winter and then there is a two hour fast? Would that be a joke?

Can we be less literal in our reading of the Quran and understanding of Islam and follow the essence of the law and willing to explain the letter of the law, when the situation demands loud and clear?

It is time for the progressive scholars to lead the way and lay out a clear alternative for all the Muslims.

  1. Zia— thank you so much for your excelent and right statement just like this—-

This is view from Progressive Muslim Scholars

As I wrote here my times that Allah sent His laws according to the context of time and the geograpic or location—progress and development of science technology —otherwise Muslim who live in Arctuc cannot do fasting for 23 hours or 1-2 hours . What is about Shalat how Muslim pray in Arctic?

Therefore I found 5 years ago in Al Quran that Islam is a religion of flexibility, not make people difficulty—
So Muslim who fast in Arctic do not need to see the sun ruse and the sun set— you can fast 12 hours from 6 am to 6 pm. You can adjust the time for praying too.

The most importain for Muslim do fasting and do praying.

Read futher that Islamic laws can be adjusted!

I wish you all a blessed and peaceful Ramadhan

ISLAM IS RELIGION OF FLEXIBILITY FROM PROGRESSIVE SCHOLARS / MUSLIM
Many verses in Al Quran describe that Islam is a religion of flexibility, as below.

1.Allah does not obligate anyone beyond his capacity..Q.2;286

    2. He has chosen you and has imposed no difficulties on you in religion; it is the cult of your father Abraham. Q22:78

3.So everyone of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting, but if anyone is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you He does not want to put you to difficulties.Q 2;185.

Even though Fasting is obligation but if Fasting harm your health , yiu do not need do fasting, you can pay some money as a substitution.

    4. ALCOHOL. They ask you about intoxicants and gambling: say, “In them there is a gross sin, and some benefits for the people. But their sinfulness far outweighs their benefit.” They also ask you what to give to charity: say, “The excess.” GOD thus clarifies the revelations for you, that you may reflect. QS 2;219.

So Muslim can drink alcohol a little bit, as long as not much

MEAT OF PORK. He only prohibits for you the eating of animals that die of themselves (without human interference), blood, the meat of pigs, and animals dedicated to other than GOD. If one is forced (to eat these), without being malicious or deliberate, he incurs no sin. GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful. [QS.2:173] [QS.5:3] QS. (5:90-91)

It is clear that Alcohol and meat of Pork are not poison.
It is very clear that Muslim can eat the meat of pork and drink alcohol a little bit, but not much.

    Editor: cut.

Again. You are a ‘lone wolf’ on the pages of TMT. I do not see any other Muslim promoting the eating of pork. Sorry, I will not eat in your house if you mix up pork with my lamb chops.

  3. The length of fast should be adjusted, hours should be in keeping with the spirit of fasting but not too onerous that it becomes dangerous for the health of the person.
