Muslims Recoil at a French Proposal to Change the Quran

manifesto published in the French daily Le Parisien on April 21—signed by some 300 prominent intellectuals and politicians, including former President Nicolas Sarkozy and former Prime Minister Manuel Valls—made a shocking demand. Arguing that the Quran incites violence, it insisted that “the verses of the Quran calling for murder and punishment of Jews, Christians, and nonbelievers be struck to obsolescence by religious authorities,” so that “no believer can refer to a sacred text to commit a crime.”

Although it’s not entirely clear whether “struck to obsolescence” means wholesale deletion of verses, the manifesto was perceived as a call to abrogate Muslims’ holiest text. And although pushing for a theological reform of Islam in France is nothing new—everyone from leading imams to President Emmanuel Macron have made plans to restructure Islam—demanding that scriptural verses be deleted is another thing altogether. In Islam, the Quran is considered divinely revealed; because it’s deemed to be the word of God, altering or deleting any part of the text would be blasphemous.

  1. All Muslims agree that there is no need to ‘reform Islam’, nor ‘alter the text of the Qur’an’, reform the mind-set of Muslims yes. There is a difference here.

  2. Should they try doing this, Allah Himself has told us in the Qur’an that He, Himself has taken on the task of protecting it.

So, Muslims shouldn’t worry too much. The matter of protecting our Holy Book is in the Hands of the Author Himself!

For the information of these meddlers who think that the Holy Qur’an is like one of the other religious texts, there are millions of Hafidhs all over the world and they will NEVER be able to be successful in removing these verses completely from the hearts and minds of Muslims.

Anyway, it’s a matter of interpreting and understanding the Qur’an and that’s what they should be doing, instead.

  3. If we believe Quran to be the word of God, how can any one think of deleting or removing any word of God. In fact we need to fix the virus in our receptors, in our minds, so that we can interpret Quran rightly

  4. Fault lies in interpretting Quran. In fact we need to fix the virus in our receptors, in our minds, so that we can interpret Quran rightly

  5. clearly the Word of Allah (The Holy Quran ) hold in it great wisdom, secrets, prophecies, knowledge, history, lessons not to mention metaphorical analogies for better comprehension to guide man to the right path. However if we , being human that we are, misinterpret it as we connect to the life. There is a saying, “ Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.” So it’s actually the man who seems to be translating the word of Allah as we see fit according to our surroundings, influences, experiences and linguistic capabilities.

  6. Muslims seriously need a reformation!!
We Muslims are the ones who need to change. It is a Muslim problem that needs a Muslim solution .

Our Muslim Brothers of Jews and Christian have changed
    the old laws like;

If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. Deuteronomy 22:20-21

Jews and Christian countries do not use this God’s law ( above) anymore, but some Extremist Muslim (ISIS) still apply it.

    All love ❤️

      • and can you please stop threatening me with hell fire? You sound like a Catholic Priest of the Inquisition.

    • Agree that it is for Muslims to interpret correctly all verses of the Qur’an for all times (these times now). Non-Muslims, with very limited knowledge of the Qur’an, trying to attempt this of course this will result in misunderstandings and failure. Even to attempt it is rather silly. (Well, I suppose they did ask Muslims to do it, but it shows their ignorance of the real meaning of the Qur’an).

    • Muslims seriously need guidance, yes, and that is why Allah, in His infinite wisdom and kindness, has chosen the Promised Messiah and Imam Mahdi to guide us during the current days, and He continued His guidance by providing us with a Khalifa who is alive and active with us TODAY ! Therefore let us all listen to him and follow his advice ! see http://www.mta.tv read http://www.alislam.org read The Muslim Times and do not try to re-invent the wheel…

  7. Somi, you can’t just pick up a verse and deem it invalid. You have to to trade it in it’s context. Like zia said. Please read the verses before. There’s a history lesson there for all. Rafiq was right, you are a broken player, playing the same tune and unable to realize that Quran isn’t just all independent clauses like bible, where you can add and remove whatever you like, there is a reason and rhyme of every verse and you need to read the Quran and understand it to know that. So read it first, and then try to understand it. http://Www.alislam.org
