President-elect’s Twitter outburst sets the stage for tense relations

WASHINGTON — U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday accused China of building artificial islands in the South China Sea.
“Did China ask us if it was OK … to build a massive military complex in the middle of the South China Sea?” Trump queried on his Twitter site. “I don’t think so!”
These are Trump’s first comments since he won the presidential election on China’s building of artificial islands in the region, which has been ruled a violation of international law.
U.S. allies have been frustrated with President Barack Obama’s failure to adopt effective measures to curb China’s maritime expansion in the South China Sea.
