(CNN) German chancellor Angela Merkel has called for a ban on full-face veils in the country, during a speech at her party’s conference on Tuesday.
“The full veil is not appropriate here, it should be forbidden wherever that is legally possible. It does not belong to us,” she said at the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) gathering.
Her comments were met with sustained applause by the audience.
It’s not the first time party leaders have proposed banning the Islamic dress, with Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere also calling for the veil to barred from public places in August.
“It does not fit into our society for us, for our communication, for our cohesion in the society…. This is why we demand you show your face,” he said at the time.

She is trying to calm the fear mongering of her Islamophobic opposition. There are probably a few scores of women in Europe, who wear full face veil.
It is better for her to win compared to far right politicians coming to power. She has been the biggest supporter for Syrian and the Muslim refugees.
It is unfortunate that even Mrs. Merkel has to ‘step so low’ to use the Burkah for ‘election purposes’. One may get fed up with democracy (as I am ‘old-lineage’ Swiss and not an ‘immigrant’ I may say so (as no one can tell me to ‘go back where you came from’ …)
anyway, if the ‘Burka Ban’ can get you elected, so be it …
I agree with Mr. Zia Shah. Probably In view of the terrorist activities of Salfis in Germany she has taken this step. In any way According to the holy Quran women are not ordered to cover their full face.
It seems that this is just another ‘democratic elections’ tool.
