Nobel prize-winner Andre Geim at the University of Manchester is known for creating one of the most promising new materials of the 21st Century – graphene. (He’s also famous for being the first person to levitate a frog with a magnet, but that’s another story.)

BBC Future spoke to Geim about what’s on his mind now, getting an insight into how a world-changing scientist actually thinks. In a wide-ranging interview, he explained why ‘complexity’ is the driving law of the Universe and the reasons why our species thrived when others did not.
