A Brampton truck driver charged with the first-degree murder of his wife following a Jan. 31 truck fire on Highway 402 appeared briefly in Sarnia court on Thursday.
Sukhchain Singh Brar, 50, was remanded in custody until Feb. 8 for a video court appearance.
A Punjabi interpreter translated Thursday’s proceedings for Brar, who appeared in court wearing a lavender turban and a Los Angeles sports team t-shirt.
A routine publication ban was imposed on the proceedings.
The body of Gurpreet Singh Brar, 37, was found in the burnt west-bound transport truck near Sarnia on Sunday.
Following an examination of the Brampton woman’s body in Toronto by the office of Ontario’s chief coroner, her husband was charged by the OPP.
The OPP investigation is ongoing.
Brar was charged with first-degree murder on Wednesday, several days after the wreckage of a Freightliner truck became the focal point of a homicide investigation.
The truck was found early Sunday morning on the side of Highway 402 east of Sarnia, but the identities of the two Brars weren’t revealed until Wednesday when an OPP news release announced that first-degree murder charges had been laid against Sukhchain Brar.
The OPP only confirmed the spousal relationship between the two people after being pressed by Postmedia.

Kabaddi Commentator Sukhchain Brar’s wife died in truck fire
In a shocking news Brampton resident Gurpreet Kaur Brar wife of famous Kabaddi commentator Sukhchain Singh Brar, died when their Freightliner Semi-tractor trailer caught fire early Sunday morning. OPP Lambton is investigating the cause of fire near Highway 402.
The incident happened near Camlachie Road overpass, just east of Sarnia, around 3.15 am. Freightliner semi-tractor trailer got engulfed in fire when police reached at the scene.
According to investigators, one occupant of the tractor trailer successfully exited the vehicle in time. Attempts to rescue the passenger were unsuccessful.
The passenger Gurpreet Kaur Brar was pronounced dead at the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the blaze remain under investigation by the Lambton County OPP Crime Unit, the Regional Fire Marshall’s and Coroner’s Offices.
The westbound 402 will remain closed from Oil Heritage Road to Mandaumin Road until at least 4 p.m.
