A COMMUTER was allegedly punched in the face after defending three Muslim women who were being racially abused on a Melbourne train.
Jason Cias, 36, said he got on the Craigieburn-bound train at Melbourne Central station with the three women who were all wearing headscarves.
One of the women sat down next to two tradesmen on the train, and one of them started abusing her.
“He said, ‘You shouldn’t be wearing that shit in Australia’,”, referring to her headscarf, Mr Cias told news.com.au.
A heated exchange followed as the woman argued with the man. Mr Cias said another one of the women spoke in Arabic and seemed to be trying to calm the situation down but was told off by the man who said: “you shouldn’t be speaking that way, you’re in Australia.”
The comment that prompted Mr Cias to get involved was when the man yelled “I’ll f***ing smash ya,”, as the women were getting off the train at North Melbourne.
“That triggered me to say enough is enough … that’s violence against women … I couldn’t abide that,” Mr Cias said.
As the women left the train, Mr Cias turned to the man and said: “Mate, they’re women”.
But Mr Cias was told to mind his own business before the man’s friend started getting aggressive.
“First he kicked my foot, saying ‘come on’, then he stood up, before I knew what happened he’d hit me.”

Mr Cias said he managed to grab the guy’s collar and told him he was going to lay charges before another guy stepped in to separate them. The men eventually moved to another carriage.
The father-of-three said he got off at Kensington with a couple of other witnesses who had called police.
“I got a pretty good black eye out of it … but I don’t think this will deter me from doing the same thing again,” Mr Cias said.
“If anything I wish I had intervened earlier.”
A Victoria Police spokesman said police were investigating the incident which happened on Friday, May 15 about 3.30pm, and which was partly captured on video by a fellow commuter.
