To begin – It would be a horrendous mistake to declare that in this age physical wars should be waged in the name of Religion.

As far as Islam is concerned: The sword, rather than revealing the beauties and excellences of the truth of Islam, conceals them and shrouds them in ambiguity, so, those who hold such beliefs are foes, not friends, of Islam. They are mean-natured and lack moral fibre, their hearts are cloaked in uncertainty, they are gullible and ignorant, and they provide the opponents of Islam with the opportunity to object that the progress of Islam depends upon the sword. This belief is detrimental to Islam.


It would be appropriate here and would suffice (for Muslim readers) to quote a prophecy of the Holy Prophet (saw) of Islam:

Hazrath Ali, may God be pleased with him, stated: So said the Prophet of Allah (PBUH):
A time will come before long when Islam will be there only in name, the Quran will exist only in words, mosques will be full of people but devoid of guidance, their Ulama will be worst creatures under the firmament – mischief will emerge from them and will arrive back to them.” Mishkat, Kitabul Ilm


Proving the prophecy true certain Maulawis have become enemies of Islam, and have played their part in perpetrating this lie that Islam was spread with the sword! When innocent Muslims hear their own Maulawis issuing edicts in favour of Jihad (to kill the disbelievers or blasphemers of Islam), they fall prey to the concept that Islam encourages this kind of Jihad and these have given rise to unfounded objections against Islam – These allegations, as we know, are groundless and those who make them do a grave injustice to Islam.

In the earlier chapters we’ve seen God permitting the Muslims to fight when He saw that the disbelievers had resorted to kill the believers – so saying that Islam was spread by the sword is the height of absurdity.

Islam impressed upon the minds of all that idolatry was wrong and against the dignity of man – this thought agitated the disbelievers and naturally they were unable to counter these arguments. At this point they resorted to severely punishing those who became Muslims as a means of preserving their false religion and dissuading people from Islam.

Muslims suffered many hardships and the highest degree of prejudice and many first believers were killed mercilessly but even under these difficult circumstances, they never drew the sword – they preferred to migrate to be saved. The savages of Arabia, who had lost all sense of morality and human values, had become the sworn enemies of Muslims and so attacked these migrated lot with a huge army to be executed there at once. Clearly, war was thrust upon them and the sword raised was only in defense.

So, can we now conclude that: The Islamic wars were fought not to spread the faith but only to protect the lives of then Muslims… is this plain yet?

Certain idiotic Maulawis of today wrongly preach that Islam was spread with the sword!

Isn’t it just commonsense to understand that the sword can only bend head but cannot win hearts?

It is utterly wrong to lay the blame on the teachings of Islam: Blame lies wholly with those who do not value human life, who do not understand the meaning of Islam. These pathetic people propagate the point that Islam has always depended upon force and coercion for its spread — This does not possess an iota of truth!

These new erroneous concepts in Islam have made Muslims to break all basic commandments of their own belief in Islam.

They murder innocent people — they do not fear God — and their foolish Maulawis have even issued edicts declaring few new laws which are in fact filth upon the clean face of Islam. Just consider the perilous state of the religion whose Maulawis issue such edicts!

All this is the work of egotistic people who falsely attribute such teachings to God and His Messenger. They must bear the burden of all the sins that are being committed by ignorant Muslims. They harbour malice towards Islam and God’s creatures and their hearts are devoid of compassion and sympathy, but they pretend otherwise. Their sermons are misleading and calculated to serve their own selfish motives. They come into mosques masquerading as holy men whilst concealing their sinful character. This is not specific to any country, city or sect. The Muslim world is rife with those who call themselves ulema, attire themselves as Maulawis, and try to assume a spiritual countenance in order to appear godly, but their deeds betray their true nature and character. They do not desire piety or compassion to spread in the world, for this would go against their own interests.

Thus Islam is now entrenched in difficulties. Most hearts are dead and there is no perceptible movement towards righteousness.

Just as a murderer is feared by everyone, today the people of other faiths are afraid of those Muslims who hold such beliefs about Jihad. And bcoz of these, all world Muslims suffer the fact that people of other faiths no longer feel secure in their vicinity, and expect the worst from them.

We have already seen the current state of Islam in the chapter “Signs showing the coming of the Promised Messiah” — however, the Maulawis do not seem to be content with the declining state of Islam & the deteriorating conditions of Muslims, they wish to drag it to even lower depths by advancing such doctrines!

Rest assured, however, that God will never allow Islam to become a target of such aspersions.

O Muslims! It’s time we banish all false beliefs from our minds – do not promote them!

And, the Maulawis will do Islam a great favour if they can unite to dispel this notion from the minds of ignorant Muslims masses.

In so doing, they will not only help to reveal the excellences and beauties of Islam, but will also remove the aversion which religious opponents have for it on account of their misconceptions, and they will be able to benefit from this fountain of light.

Let me now present the true teachings of Islam as they have been expounded by Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) – the Promised Messiah, the Holy Qur’an, the Traditions of the Holy Prophet (saw) and the history of Islam.

Teachings have been same since the beginning:

The Promised Messiah (as) says:

‘The prevailing practice found amongst Muslims of attacking people of other religions, which they call “Jihad”, is not a lawful war; for it is clearly against the commandment of God and the Prophet Muhammad (saw) and constitutes a grave sin.’

‘Those who possess sight read Hadiths and ponder over the Holy Qur’an – this should help you understand that the kind of Jihad practiced by many of today’s barbaric people is not Islamic Jihad. Rather, these misguided activities that have spread amongst the Muslims are instigated by the Nafs-e-Ammarah [self that incites to evil] or by a crude desire for Paradise.’

Today terrorists kill innocent people in their places of worship, on public transport and in public gatherings, in the name of Jihad and in the Name of Allah andHis Prophet (saw). The underlying cause of religious extremism, oppression, violence, and terrorism by some Muslims, is the erroneous interpretation of Jihad preached by some of the so-called Islamic scholars (or Maulawis.) The Promised Messiah (as) laid the responsibility for religious fanaticism, terrorism, and the unjustified carnage on the mullahs (Islamic clergy).

He prays: ‘May God bring these ignorant maulawis back to the right path. They have misled the populace into believing that the keys to Paradise lie in beliefs that are oppressive, cruel and completely immoral.’

He refers to them saying: They consider Jihad to be obligatory in their hearts, and few of them think otherwise. They adhere so strongly to their doctrine of Jihad—which is completely misguided and entirely contradicts the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and Hadith—that they label as “dajjal” [Antichrist] and advocate the murder of anyone who objects their thoughts on religion.

Woe on the Muslims of this age!

They have lost the second part of the Shariah (Islamic Law), which consists of the sympathy of mankind, love, and service. They claim to have belief in the Unity of God, but are involved in barbaric morals, which are disgraceful!

O Muslims! Spread the message of the peaceful teachings of Islam in the world. The Ahmadiyya Muslim community has, despite its relatively small size, translated the Qur’an into more than 70 languages for all world people to read and understand it. It has also established its own twenty-four hour international television station that hosts programmes explaining the true nature of Islam. The community has published thousands of books and other forms of literature, and held countless interfaith events around the world in which leaders and followers of various faiths, as well the general public, are invited to come together and remove the misunderstandings between religions.

All this represents the practical implementation of the Promised Messiah (as)’s mission to spread Islam through purely peaceful and intellectual means. Jihad is to protect the right of worship.

‘…the time of the Promised Messiah has arrived…now God the Exalted will produce such heavenly means, where the world which was filled with oppression, and unjustified blood-shedding, will now be filled with justice, peace, and reconciliation. Blessed are the sovereigns and kings who play a part in achieving this objective.’

Is Jihad allowed today? If yes, then of what kind?

We have already read as in what situations and under what conditions war has been permitted in the early days of Islam. But the question is: Are such religious wars permitted in this age? And if not, what is the significance of Jihad today?

In this developed world of our time, everybody has the right to practice, to preach and to profess his faith. Conditions for war for the sake of religion DO NOT EXIST. Then what is this uproar about Jihad?

I want to briefly present the definition of Jihad, as given by the Founder of the Ahmadiyya community (as) and to say how one can engage in it in this present age.

More than a hundred years ago, in response to an objection related to Jihad, the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, while answering the critic stated:

‘This critic has mentioned the Jihad found in Islam and thinks that the Qur’an incites to Holy war unconditionally. There cannot be a bigger fabrication. The Qur’an only permits fighting against those who prevent the people of God from believing and entering His religion and from abiding by God’s commandments and from worshipping Him. And God permits fighting against those who fight Muslims without reason and who drive the believers from their homes and their lands; and who force God’s creation to enter into their religion; and who want to annihilate the religion of Islam, and prevent persons from becoming Muslims.’

So, this is the true Islamic teaching explained to us by the Messiah of this age, who was to establish peace on a strong footing, and was to enrich the world with an atmosphere of love and affection.

Today there are suicide attacks done by so called ‘Jihadis’ only to inflict wounds on the enemy soldiers, but, in fact, fellow Muslims are also killed in these attacks. All these are entirely wrong. It is the responsibility of governments to secure the peace. Any act committed by a person who is not part of an army is not Jihad of Islam, but a rebellion.

The question I raised was the significance of Jihad, and the response is that, in this age, the Jihad accepted by the Ahmadiyya Muslim community is the reformation of one’s self– The Greater Jihad.

The Promised Messiah says: This is the age of personal Jihad & Spiritual Jihad…. Or call it ‘A Jihad against self’ whereby you would need to cleanse your heart of all dirt of enmity, jealousy, hatred, thoughts of violence, etc.

Jihad mentioned in the Holy Qur’an and also in Hadith is Jihad against your own evil dispositions, evil inclinations etc. and to continue to wage a war against your bad-self which would continue to drag you to all that is satanic and that is the Jihad between light and darkness.

The world is apparently rapidly advancing towards destruction because of the envy and hatred that its people have in their hearts. This is because they have forgotten their God. It is a terrible end that you cannot even imagine.

My prayer is that man should turn away from these envies and hatred and should truly repent and recognising God Almighty should become His worshipper. May we be the ones to spread the sweet smell of love… May Allah cause this to be so: Amin

This is not a recent idea, it was mentioned 1400 years ago by the Founder of Islam upon his return from a battle, when he said that we are moving from a minor Jihad to a greater Jihad, and the greater Jihad is the Jihad of reforming one’s self, that is never-ending and forever.

True Jihad is the reformation of the evils which are borne in the times of relative peace and comfort. Serving mankind is a real Jihad, and the 120 years of the Ahmadiyya history bears testimony to it. We are engaged in this Jihad and I would want to persuade you to do this.

Guiding us in this direction, the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community (as) says:

‘At this time I specifically instruct my Jama’at [Community], which accepts me as the Promised Messiah that they should always stay from foul habits. God has sent me as the Promised Messiah and has clothed me with the garment of the Messiah (as), son of Mary.

I therefore admonish you: refrain from evil and be truly compassionate towards mankind. Cleanse your hearts of malice and spite, for you will become like angels through this habit. It is a filthy and unholy religion that is devoid of sympathy for humanity, and polluted is the path riddled with a rancour based on selfish desires… Be compassionate towards all for the sake of God so that you may be shown mercy in the heavens. Come, and I will teach you a way that will cause your light to prevail over all other lights. Abandon all lowly spite and jealousy; be compassionate for mankind, and lose yourselves in God.’

‘I have come to you with an order: Jihad with the sword has ended from this time forward, but the Jihad of purifying your souls must continue. I do not say of this on my own accord. This is indeed the Will of God’

Then he mentions the Tradition of the Holy Prophet of Islam (saw):

‘When the Messiah comes he will put an end to religious war.’

He says:

‘Accordingly, I command those who have joined my ranks to refrain from all such thoughts, to purify their hearts, to foster sympathy and to be compassionate towards the suffering. They should spread peace on earth, because that will cause their faith to spread in return.’

That teaching is to honor and discharge the rights we owe to God Almighty and to His creation, to pull down the walls of hatred, and to spread the fragrance of love and affection.

Through the excerpts that I have said above, I’m sure that I have made you aware, to some extent at least, of the true teachings of Islam: Now you should decide for yourselves whether Islam teaches terrorism or peace? It is neither right nor fair to condemn a religion merely because of the actions of a group or of a few individuals.

So I request you my dear to speak out for justice in your respective circles. That would also be a true Jihad on your part, but, of course, I will not make you member of any “Jihadi” organization.

Truth About the Alleged Denial of Jehad in Islam Ahmadiyyat

The opponents of the Holy Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama‘at also level this allegation against him that he (God forbid) abrogated the Islamic duty of Jehad. This is a baseless allegation. Jehad is an important duty and its obligatory nature and its importance is quite clear on the basis of the Holy Quran and the Holy Prophet’s Ahadith.

Jehad is a comprehensive word which packs a vast range of meaning within it. Scholars of Islam and authorities on religious matters have expounded various kinds of Jehad, e.g., Jehad against one’s self (Jehad bin Nafs), Jehad through financial sacrifice (Jehad bil Maal), Jehad with the help of one’s knowledge (Jehad bil ‘Ilm), the Greatest Jehad (Jehad-e-Akbar), the Great Jehad (Jehad-e-Kabeer), and the Smallest Jehad (Jehad-e-Asghar) etc. etc.

As regards the Smallest Jehad, i.e., the Jehad with Sword, the scholars of Islam and authorities on religious matters who lived prior to the time of the Holy Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama‘at, declared that the admissibility of this particular kind of Jehad—which is termed as Qitaal in the Holy Quran’s nomenclature—is contingent upon, and conditional with, the existence of a set of specific circumstances and particular conditions. Unfortunately, with the passage of time an erroneous interpretation of Jehad has found its way into the Muslim ummah, according to which Jehad consists of spreading the religion of Islam with sword (absolutely wrong).

Various excerpts from the perceptive writings of the Holy Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama‘at, on the subject of the Islamic concept of Jehad, are presented as under:

“Why did Islam have to resort to fighting and what is the purpose of Jehad? With the very birth of Islam it was confronted with great difficulties and all peoples conceived enmity against it. It has always been the case that on the advent of a Prophet or a Messenger his opponents, perceiving that his followers are a company of earnest, righteous and courageous people who are likely to march forward quickly, begin to entertain rancor and jealousy against them; more particularly is the case with the divines and leaders of other religions…. They begin to devise projects to harm the new faith. Very often they feel in their hearts that by persecuting a righteous one of God they have become subject to God’s wrath and their wrongful conduct also betrays that their hearts feel guilty, yet the fierce fire of jealousy drives them into the pits of enmity. These were the causes which not only prevented the leaders of the polytheists and the Jews and the Christians from accepting the truth, but incited them to bitter enmity and they began to consider means of wiping out Islam from the face of the earth. As in the beginning the number of Muslims was small, their opponents, out of the natural arrogance which inspires the minds of people who consider themselves superior to the followers of the new faith in respect of wealth, numbers, esteem and rank, treated the Muslims with bitter hostility as they did not desire that Islam, the heavenly plant, should take root upon the earth. They put forth their utmost effort to destroy the righteous and left out no means of causing them to be hurt. They were afraid lest the new religion should become established and its progress might ruin their own religion and culture. Out of this fear, which terrified their hearts, they had to recourse to every type of coercion and cruelty in order to destroy Islam. They killed Muslims savagely and during a long period which extended over thirteen years, they persisted with this persecution. The swords of these wild beasts cut to pieces most cruelly the faithful servants of God who were the pride of mankind; and orphans and weak and humble women were slaughtered in the streets of Mecca. Even then the Divine command was clear that evil should not be opposed and the righteous ones carried out the command in every case. The streets turned red with their blood but they raised no cry. They were slaughtered like sacrificial lambs but they uttered no complaint. The Holy Messenger of God, upon whom be the endless peace of heaven and earth, was repeatedly made the target of stones that drew his blood; yet that mountain of truth and steadfastness bore all these torments with a cheerful and loving heart. This attitude of humility and steadfastness encouraged their enemies to intensify their persecution and they made this holy community their quarry. Then God who does not permit that cruelty and mercilessness should exceed all bounds turned with compassion towards His persecuted servants and His wrath was kindled against the wicked, and He informed His servants through the Holy Quran that He was a witness to everything that had been inflicted upon them and that He now gave them permission to oppose their opponents and that He was Mighty and would not leave the wrongdoers unpunished. This was the commandment which was designated Jehad. It was set forth in the following words:

Permission to fight is granted to those against whom war is made, because they have been wronged and Allah indeed has the power to help them. They are those who have been driven out of their homes unjustly (22:40-41).

The Holy Prophet Ahmad (as) adds:

Islam permits taking up of the sword only in defense and in opposition to people who themselves take it up first, and it permits the slaughter only of those who embark upon slaughter first. It does not lay down that the Muslims while they are subjects of a non-Muslim sovereign who deals with them with justice and equity should take up arms against him as rebels. According to the Holy Quran this is the way of the wicked and not of the righteous. But the Torah has not made this distinction clear at any place. This shows that the Holy Quran in all its commandments, whether of majesty or of beauty, adheres to the straight line of equity, justice, mercy and beneficence and is unique in this respect also among all the scriptures.” [Anjaam-e-Aatham, Roohaani Khazaa’in vol. 11, p. 37]

“In the early days of Islam, the defensive wars and physical fighting was also needed for the additional reason that the preacher of Islam was not responded to with arguments and proofs. Instead, he was met with sword, so he perforce had to retaliate with sword. But, these days, we are not confronted with sword; rather objections are raised against Islam by the use of pen and through arguments. It is for this reason that God has so willed that in this day and age, the task of saif (sword) must be accomplished with pen, and the opponents must be repelled by written polemics. Therefore, now it does not behove anyone to try to retaliate against pen with the sword: “If you do not observe the priorities of rank, you act in disbelief.” [Malfoozaat, New Edition, vol. 1, p. 37]

“In this age, Jehad has taken on a spiritual complexion. The Jehad of this age is simply to try peacefully contribute to the propagation of Islam, rebut the objections of the opponents and disseminate the excellences of Islam in the world. This is what Jehad consists of, until God may cause a different set of circumstances to prevail in the world.” [Newspaper Al-Badr, Qadian, 14 August, 1902, p. 239, Column 3]

In a situation such as this when the opponents want to, and actually do, attack us with the pen, how foolish would it be if we were to get down to bludgeoning them. Let me tell you explicitly that if, under these circumstances, anyone were to misuse the name of Islam to retaliate with militancy, then such a person will only bring disgrace to the fair name of Islam.

Because Islam never intended to allow that swords be drawn for no reason and without just cause. The objectives of modern warfare, after its professional development, have changed from being religious to being materialistic. How unjust it would be to draw sword against the objector instead of replying to his objections. The methods of combat have changed along with the change in the spirit of the time.

So, first of all, you need to use your head and your heart and purify your souls. Seek help and victory from God, the Exalted: beseeching Him with truth and righteousness, for this is the immutable law and an established principle of God. And if the Muslims have hopes of courting victory by mere vainglorious boasting, then it would be impossible. Allah, the Exalted, does not value empty boasts, He values genuine and righteously inspired fear of God (taqwa), as He says: Surely Allah is with those who restrain themselves and those who are benevolent. (16:129)

“The Holy Quran clearly forbids the use of force for the spread of the faith and directs its propagation through its inherent qualities and good example. Do not be misled by the notion that in the beginning the Muslims were commanded to take up the sword because the sword was not taken up for the spread of the faith, but in self-defense against the enemies of Islam and for the purpose of establishing peace and security. It was never meant for coercion in matters of faith.” [Sitarah Qaisariyyah, Roohaani Khazaa’in vol. 15, pp. 120-121]

“I do not know from where our opponents have gathered that Islam was spread by the sword. God has set forth clearly in the Holy Quran: there shall be no compulsion in the religion of Islam (2.257). Then who prescribed the use of force for the spread of the faith and when was it done and with what?” [Paigham-e-Sulh, Roohaani Khazaa’in vol. 23, p. 468]

“The Promised Messiah has come to this world to dispel the concept of drawing sword in the name of religion, and to firmly establish with his proofs and arguments that Islam is a religion which certainly does not need the help of sword for its propagation. Instead, it is the excellences inherent in its teachings, its verities and profound truths, its proofs and arguments, the fresh instances of God’s support and Divine signs, and its intrinsic magnetism are the factors which have always caused its advancement and propagation. So let it be known to all those who raise the objection that Islam was spread with the help of sword, that they are completely false in leveling this allegation. The efficacy of Islam’s teachings is not dependent upon any coercion. If anyone doubts it, let him spend some time in my company and see for himself how Islam furnishes proof of its life through arguments and signs. Now God, the Exalted, wishes and He has intended to remove all the objections from the glorious body of Islam, which have been leveled against it by evil persons. The objectors who allege that Islam was spread by dint of sword will now be put to great shame.” [Malfoozaat, vol. 3, p. 176]

“Our Holy Prophet (saw) suffered great persecution at the hands of the nonbelievers at Mecca and thereafter. The thirteen years which he spent at Mecca were years of great affliction and suffering of many kinds—to think of them brings tears to one’s eyes. But he did not raise the sword against his enemies, nor did he reply to their abuses…. It is, therefore, wrong and unjust to suppose that the Holy Prophet (saw), or his companions ever fought for spreading the Faith, or that they ever coerced anyone to join the fold of Islam.” [Masih Hindustaan Mein, Roohaani Khazaa’in vol. 15, p. 10]

According to the religion of Islam, extrajudicial killing of any human being is not legitimate, it is unlawful (haraam), and counted among the most heinous sins; regardless of whether that human being is Muslim or non-Muslim, Christian or Jew, Hindu or Paarsi, etc. etc.

It is a matter of certainty that whoever would kill anyone would be deprived of the fragrance of Paradise, in the light of the Hadith: Whoever kills a person who is protected by an accord will be deprived of the fragrance of Paradise.

Hadhrat Khwaja Ghulam Fareed, Sajjadah Nasheen of Chachrhan Sharif says: 

“Hadhrat Mirza Sahib spends all his time in worshiping God, the Exalted and the Majestic: either he is engaged in the daily prayer, or recitation of the Holy Quran, or keeps himself occupied in other religious tasks. And he has set about to defend Islam with such high resolve that he has invited even the Empress of the British Empire to accept Islam. Similarly, he has sent the message of Islam to the monarchs of Russia, France and other kingdoms. All his efforts and endeavors are geared towards ensuring that people must abandon the doctrine of Trinity and the Cross—which is unequivocal disbelief—and accept the Oneness of God.

But look at the predicament of contemporary religious divines that they have completely overlooked the actions of all the other false religions and have rallied against such a righteous man who hails from Ahle Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah, adheres to the straight path and guides others to it. And they issue edicts of heresy (fatwa-e-kufr) against him! Look at his Arabic works which surpass human contrivance: all his works are permeated with profound perceptions, truths, and spiritual guidance. He is certainly not a disbeliever in the essentials of the practice of Ahle Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah and of the Faith.” [Isharaat-e-Fareedi, vol. 3, pp. 69-70. Translated from Persian]

We entrust this matter to our All-Knowing, All-Aware, God of Honour and Dignity, albeit we add only this much:

O triumphant one! Benedictions be to you. Your rank is inaccessibly above the vile taunts and imputations of your malicious detractors. O ye who was the Moon of the Fourteenth Century—inspired by the Divine light of Hadhrat Muhammad (saw)—the spit of your detractors cannot reach the celestial heights of your exalted abode.

The allegation against the Holy Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama‘at that he did not believe in Jehad is clearly negated by his teachings, his life of great striving and endeavour (mujahida), and his pronouncements.
