A Brooklyn-based women’s clothing line run by two Orthodox Jews has come under fire for sharing a picture to Instagram of a popular Muslim fashion blogger wearing one of their designs. muslim blogger

Mimu Maxi, a boutique specializing in modest-yet-stylish clothing, received dozens of furious responses from their Jewish followers, who accused them of being ‘insensitive’ to the worsening conflict in Israel.

The sisters-in-law behind the line, Mushky Notik and Mimi Hecht, responded on Facebook, saying they stand by their decision to post the picture 100per cent because ‘this kind of collaboration and awareness is a huge component in fighting ignorance and hatred toward Jews.’

A picture that tells a thousand words: Muslim blogger Summer Albarcha is wearing a lime-green skirt by Orthodox Jew-owned clothing line Mimu Maxi

The photo was a regram from Summer Albarcha, creator of Hipster Hijabis, a popular Instagram account with pictures of stylish women (mostly Ms Albarcha herself) wearing headscarves.

In the picture, Ms Albarcha is wearing Mimu Maxi’s ankle-length lime-green skirt, Jessica Simpson shoes, an H&M cardigan – and, of course, a hijab.

Negative comments started pouring into Mimu Maxi’s Instagram comments sections almost immediately after they posted the picture. One user called the picture ‘appalling’ and another said it was ‘definitely not the right timing.’ Numerous women said they wouldn’t shop the brand again.

‘This is highly inappropriate,’ said Instagram user Raizys24. ‘I find it surprising that you would that this would be a source of promotion given the majority of your customer base. Disappointing.’

User Geturfingeon added: ‘I understand that you’re attempting to diversify your customer body and get on the peace and love train; however, I believe as Jews we must remain true to our values and maintain a sensitivity towards and brothers and sisters in Israel.
‘Not every Muslim belongs to Hamas. Many Muslims wants peace just like the rest of us. Lay off, people’

Followers of Mimu Maxi came to their defense – and messages of support quickly outweighed the vitriol.
