Sound System covers Grand Mosque Prayers up to 9 Km

Epigraph:

And remember the time when We assigned to Abraham the site of the House and said, ‘Associate not anything with Me, and keep My House clean for those who perform the circuits, and those who stand up and those who bow down and fall prostrate in Prayers; and proclaim unto mankind the Pilgrimage. They will come to thee on foot, and on every lean camel, coming by every distant track.’ (Al Quran 22:28-29)

Authorities at Makkah have installed 4,000 loudspeakers all over the Grand Mosque and surrounding areas to ensure first-class sound quality during the peak Ramadan and Haj seasons, when hundreds of thousands of worshippers flood into the holy city to perform their religious rituals.

“Speakers have also been deployed in corridors and outdoor squares,” said Faras Al-Saadi, operations director at the Grand Mosque, on Saturday.

“Authorities installed 656 speakers in the mosque’s eastern corridor and in the newly opened floors for circumambulation during Ramadan,” Al-Saadi said in a statement.

“A technical committee has chosen only the most advanced brands and models after examining the most effective sound systems worldwide,” he said. “Thanks to this premium quality speakers, prayers will be heard up to 9,000 meters away, from Gaza Street to Ibrahim Khalil Street,” he said.

“The outside speakers are wind-proof, meaning sound will remain crystal clear even in rough weather. This is a very complex technical accomplishment. Special poles have been set up on several roads around the area and south of the mosque as well,” said Al-Saadi.

The loudspeakers installed at the top of the Makkah Clock Tower can be heard up to seven km away and the powerful green and white lights that go off at prayer times can be seen from 30 km, helping worshippers with hearing difficulties.

  2. Salam, Iam Rasheed from Nigeria. Please rescue me from this confussion! During Ramadan Tarawee is observed preceeding the fasting the following day, Imams and Ustaz differ in their opinions as regards the number of RAKAT/BREAKS that could be observed during the tarawee. Some observe 8 rakats,4 breaks, 10 rakats, 5 breaks before the 3 rakats for witri and another 11 rakats at a stretch. A Hadith is quoted to have said that the Prophet (SAW) never observed more than 11 rakat ( 8 + 3 witri) mention was not made wheather he observed breaks or not! Also, it has been confirmed that 20 rakats are observed the Grand Mosque in Makkah. Please confirm. Maa Salam. Rasheed

    • Rasheed. I am not a Mufti, but let me say: Tarawee is not an obligatory prayer. (You can see in Makkah for instance during Tarawee pilgrims still go around the Ka’aba and do not stop in order to join the Tarawee prayers). Yes, I also read the Hadith you are quoting. Shias do not say Tarawees at all (as far as I know). It is also stated that Tarawee prayers actually started after the Prophet (peace be on him). In other words: As Tarawee is not obligatory consequently all the different forms are ok. You can choose the one you feel suits you. In the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community we follow the 8 + 3 form (may be because of the Hadith you mentioned). And may Allah forgive our weaknesses and accept our prayers … (sorry for not releasing you from your confusion!!!!)

  3. As Brother Rafiq has mentioned, Traveeh is not obligatory prayer. It may not even be important Sunnah prayer. It seems to have been evolved.
The prophet s.a.w.s. only prayed for three times and not the whole month of Ramadhan.
Maulvis are giving different reasons for that.

There are other news that traveeh prayer was permitted or recommended by Hazrat Umar Rz.a. The people used to pray in the mosque individually at night, quite many parts (raka’at). hazrat Umar Rz.a. organized it into collective prayer where the quran will be recited during the Traveeh prayer.
The actual purpose of this prayer is to recite Quran and to listen to Quran. It is useful for those who cannot read the Quran. It is a service for the Quran and the month of Ramadhan.
    I describe a Hadith here. it is narrated by Hazrat Fatima Rz.a. (?);
The prophet Muhammad s.a.w.s. stated ” Angel Jibreel a.s. revised with me the revealed portion of the Quran, once, in the month of Ramadhan every year. This year he revised it twice. (That was the last year of his life.)
This year Jibreel a.s. has revised the whole Quran with me twice. (That is repeated the reading of the Quran twice.)
Every prophet attained (at least) half the age of his predecessor (prophet). Isa lived for 120 years and I hope I will go away at the head of sixty (years age).”
This Hadith also puts some light on the reading, reciting of the Quran in Ramadhan.
Traveeh prayer is not the same as other obligatory or Sunnah prayers. I have seen four or five different Imams leading congregational Traveeh prayers in the same mosque at the same time. So those prayers are being observed in parallel.
The Shias will not observe anything which is started by hazrat Umar Rz.a.
The ahle Hadith people observe 8+3 parts. Most Sunnis observe 20+3 parts. There is news of 10 parts and 36 parts too. What to do about it!
