Moderate Muslims, Hard Line Islam

Pak Tea House: Raza Habib Raja

Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) is a body whose job is to give recommendations to the government for making the legal framework more in line with Islam and right now it is actively reviewing several existing laws for that purpose.

The impetus for Islamization is not only emanating from the constitution itself which declares Islam as a state religion but also from the general public’s desire to see religion play a greater role in Pakistan.

It has been claimed that a huge majority actually wants religion to have a more prominent role in Pakistan’s legal framework. This is a claim I won’t dispute as many surveys have indeed confirmed it. For example Pew Research revealed that a whopping 84% want Sharia as their official law.

At the same time it has also been said that wanting Islam does not essentially mean that people want a hardline version of Islam or favor Talibanization. I agree to this assertion also because despite increasing extremism, Talibanization as a way of life is still not popular.

In fact this dichotomy between wanting more Islam while rejecting Talibanization has been well documented in surveys. For example, World Opinion Survey in 2007, found out that while more than 60% want an increased role of Sharia  but at the same time only 15% (of those who want more role for religion)actually favor any kind of Talibinization.

The logical deduction from the above observation is that people want more yet moderate Islam in their lives. But here comes the problem: When you desire more religion it invariably would lead to more hardline version.

And this is what is happening.  Right now the recommendations from the CII are making the headlines, apparently shocking even some religious minded people.  Two of my close friends who are religious but consider themselves moderate are of the opinion that while Pakistan’s legal framework should be based on Sharia but what CII is recommending is something completely regressive.

SYARIAH LAWS ARE FORBIDDEN ( HARAM) TO BE THE OFFICIAL LAWS.

We, moderately educated Muslim should define what is moderately educated Muslim stand for, and what hardline or extremist stand for.

We, moderately educated Muslim will stand for the truth of Shariah laws, God’s laws. It means we follows God’s laws through His Book of Al Quran, not through of the book of Hadits that created by human.

What Allah and prophet said in Holy Book of Al Quran.

The laws of God, or Al Quran can not be the official laws. If the God’s law become the official laws in Pakistan, it means Government impose his interpretation of Islam to people. It means the scholars through Government force people to obey God’s laws. Right? This is wrong.

WHEREAS Allah and Prophet Muhammad(saw mentioned several time in Al Quran, that there is nor compulsion in syariah laws.

    1. There is no compulsion in religion QS 2;256

    2. ”your duty (Muhammad ) is only to convey (the Message) and on Us is the reckoning”. QS 13:40.

    3. So remind them (O Muhammad (SAW)) — you are only a one who reminds. You are not a dictator over them — Save the one who turns away and disbelieves. Then Allâh will punish him with the greatest punishment. Verily, to Us will be their return; Then verily, for Us will be their reckoning. QS 88; 21-26.

    4. He has chosen you(Muhammad) and did not impose any hardship on you in the religion, the faith of your father Ibrahim QS 22:78

That is clear that there is NO force or compulsion in Islamic teaching. This is the truth of Syariah Laws.

If Government of Pakistan want Syariah laws become official laws, it means Government is against commandment of Allah and prophet Muhammad (saw) said above. Right?

Extremist Muslim stand for imposing the syariah laws according to their interpretation through the official laws.

I.e, like Saudi Arabia and Taliban.
Government of Saudi Arabia impose women to wear burqa, hijab, jilbab when they go out.

Government impose Muslim to pray in Mosque on Friday.

Then step by step, Government will impose man to have beard, wear turban like prophet.

This syariah laws is wrong, misleading people.

If moderately educated Muslim accept syariah laws as official laws, they are not moderately educated Muslim, they are hardline Muslim or extremist Muslim like Taliban, Jihadis, Al Qaida, saudi Arabia etc.

    God will condemn Pakistan and will be punished as Allah said;

Those who does not obey Allah’s laws completely, I will punish you. I will bring disaster on you.

If you do evil act and reject the God’s law, God will bring on you disaster, confusion, and trouble in everything you do, until you are quickly and completely destroyed, This disaster will be with you until you die. Deuteronomy 28;20.

May God guide Pakistan’s scholars and political leader to the truth of Syariah Laws.

  2. Erdogan of Turkey said that islam is one and to say that there is ‘moderate islam’ is an insult.

  3. Those who thinks that Islam in ONE now, they do not see a reality after the death of Prophet Muhammad (saw). They do not accept the different interpretation of Islam. Those who does not share their beliefs accused infidel, enemy of Islam should be banned or punished.

This kind of thought very dangerous, hatred toward others. hatred stir up conflict and violence.

God accepts and allows different idea, thought and interpretation of Islam, because God create people with different head and cultures Right QS 49:13.

Please accept people who differs with you. Love each others, let God will judge among His people.

    All love

  4. Alatif,
Muhammad said that his movement will split into several camps. There are over seventy of them now. In spite of that, all of them preach the same message of and exhibit intolerance and mayhem. While there might be diversity arising from minor doctrinal differences, the core belief remains the same. For as long as all of them believe in the inerrancy or immutability of Muhammad’s message, nothing has changed.

  5. @ Namelee
all of them preach the same message of and exhibit intolerance and mayhem.====

    They are not the same.
Those who follows the book of Hadits are intolerance…act violence..because they follow idols.

Those who follows Al Quran, are anti violence and promote Islam is peaceful religion and bring mercy for mankind.

    All love
