One-a-Day Commandments of the Holy Quran – 90. Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you‏

90. Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you

[4:79] Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you be in strongly built towers. And if some good befalls them, they say, ‘This is from Allah;’ and if evil befalls them, they say, ‘This is from thee.’ Say, ‘All is from Allah.’ What has happened to these people that they come not near understanding anything?

[62:9] Say, ‘The Death from which you flee will surely meet you. Then will you be returned unto Him Who knows the unseen and the seen, and He will inform you of what you had been doing.’

[29:58] Every soul shall taste of death; then to Us shall you be brought back.

[55:27] All that is on it (earth) will pass away. [55:28] And there will remain only the Person of thy Lord, Master of Glory and Honour.

[7:26] He said, ‘Therein shall you live, and therein shall you die, and there from shall you be brought forth.’

[39:31] Surely thou wilt die, and surely they too will die.

[39:43] Allah takes away the souls of human beings at the time of their death; and during their sleep of those also that are not yet dead. And then He retains those against which He has decreed death, and sends back the others till an appointed term. In that surely are Signs for a people who reflect.

[56:61] We have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented

[63:12] And Allah will not grant respite to a soul when its appointed time has come; and Allah is Well-Aware of what you do.

[21:35] We granted not everlasting life to any human being before thee. If then thou shouldst die, shall they live here for ever? [21:36] Every soul shall taste of death; and We prove you with evil and good by way of trial. And to Us shall you be returned.

[3:186] Every soul shall taste of death. And you shall be paid in full your rewards only on the Day of Resurrection. So whosoever is removed away from the Fire and is made to enter Heaven has indeed attained his goal. And the life of this world is nothing but an illusory enjoyment.

[31:35] Verily, with Allah alone is the knowledge of the Hour. And He sends down the rain, and He knows what is in the wombs. And no soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Surely, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.

  1. Well, did you hear the story of the servant in Basrah?

Once upon a time a man was living with his servant in Basrah. The servant used to go daily to the market to buy fresh vegetable. The master was a kind man and did not complain when the servant used to spend some time gossiping with his friends. But one day he came back quickly and said to his master:

“Master, Master, please give me a Camel! I have to go to Samarrah!”

The master asked what was the matter and the servant replied: “I went to the bazaar and there I met the angel of death. And he recognized me! He said to me: Oh Ali, what are you doing in Basrah”. I was scared and run home and, please Master, give me a camel.”

So the master gave his servant a camel.

Reflecting at home about the affair he thought that this servant did not usually tell a lie. He therefore thought ‘let me go to the market and see what is going on’. And, yes, he met the angel of death there. So he spoke to him and said: “Why did you have to scare my servant?”.

The angel of death apologized and said:

“I am sorry, but I was just so surprised to see him here, because I have an appointment with him tonight in Samarrah”.
