School issues a yearly Medal Award in his memory for the brightest senior school student
The Montreal Gazette:
To his students, Munir Ahmad was a very special teacher.
For the past five years, he had been the math and science teacher at Opawikoscikan School in Pelican Narrows. He encouraged his students to never give up.
Late last month, Ahmad died after an apparent heart attack.
“He was encouraging, he was helpful, he was kind, he was patient, and he was also the most humble human being ever,” said the school’s principal Susan Custer.

Before his passing, Ahmad arranged for a day of prayer to be held April 4. A group of his Muslim friends from Saskatoon were to come up and teach the students about the Muslim faith, while also learning about the Cree culture.
As a way of honouring Ahmad, the special day will go ahead. All this week, the students have been preparing drawings and art. Custer gets emotional when looking at what the students have done.
One piece of art, is all done in sequins, and there is a message on the back: “Missing your smile and your good morning.”
An acrylic painting will be presented to the group when they arrive on Friday. The painting is a portrait of Ahmad fishing.
“The thing says a teacher takes a hand, opens a mind, and touches a heart; and then it says in capital letters R.I.P MR because everyone just called him mister,” said Custer.
She said Ahmad had a huge impact in the community. He was respected by everyone because he loved everyone. The motto he lived by was: Love for all, hatred for no one.
Ahmad’s funeral was held in Saskatoon. Twenty students from Pelican Narrows travelled by bus to attend. The community has raised close to $10,000 for Ahmad’s family. Young children donated whatever change they had in their pockets.
“He just loved people, and it wasn’t that phony kind of love. It wasn’t anything superficial. It was a deep abundance of love and it’s so scarce in today’s society,” said Custer.
The school is preparing a special memory wall in Ahmad’s honour.
