TORONTO — A Hamilton man is facing fraud charges after allegedly scamming two women he met through a dating website.
Investigators allege that 30-year-old Zeeshan Qureshi began dating two women – one in her 50s, the other in her 30s – after meeting them online, and then proceeded to “weave a fabulous sounding story of success,” earn their trust, and use a scam to “borrow” money that was never returned.
Police say that Qureshi — who is reportedly alleged to have taken around $40,000 from the victims — set up a fake name and profile on what investigators only describe as a “popular dating site.” Investigators believe the accused may have used multiple aliases. One fake profile Qureshi is alleged to have used is “Alex Hermain, a 38-year-old from Burlington.”
One of the victims is reportedly from Toronto, the other from Halton Region.
Qureshi is charged with fraud over $5,000, fraud under $5,000 and being in the possession of the proceeds of crime. He is due in a Milton courtroom March 26.
