‘In the Know’ Publishes a New Volume about Educational Resources

Vol II, Issue 13
November 1, 2013

Dear Readers: Assalamo alaikum wa rahmatullah.‘Knowledge is Power’ is a time honored quote. As Muslims (men and women), we are obligated to seek knowledge, both religious and secular. We are committed to inspiring and enabling all concerned to fulfill this sacred obligation. While the importance of secular knowledge is somewhat self-evident, that of religious knowledge needs some reflection and soul searching. To practice our faith, we need to know our faith. As noted by Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih Vab, in his Friday sermon of August 16, 2013, new converts to Islam Ahmadiyyat are naturally more conscientious of their faith than the born Ahmadi Muslims. Therefore, we all need to diligently study the Writings (Roohani Khazain) of the Imam of this Age, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as) to gain firsthand knowledge of our faith. You can select and start with any of these writings, individually or collectively as a family or a study group. Please keep us posted with your progress. You can even take credit for studying the book(s) prescribed by your respective auxiliary syllabus. We will annually recognize your progress nationally. Insha-Allah. Please stay tuned for more administrative details. May Allah help us all in this humble endeavor. Ameen. All students are requested to register at register here to update the National Student Database. For younger students, all parents are requested to register their children.Wassalam,

Tips on Writing a Personal Statement
Arguably, one of the most difficult parts of the college admission process is writing the personal statement. The essay is an opportunity for students to introduce themselves, yet students find the essay challenging because there is no set formula. We hope these tips will help you formulate a stellar personal statement:

  1. Answer the Question Being Asked. The prompt will set the parameters of the essay and may even offer more specific instructions on what the school is and is NOT looking for in the essay. Some colleges want very specific information listed, while others are much more broad and flexible in regards to the content. Although it may be tempting to submit one personal statement for all college applications, try to personalize the personal statement to the school. Is there a specific professor you would like to work with or particular aspect of the school that attracts you? Mention these in the essay.
  2. Consider your audience. Most likely, professors who serve on an admissions committee in the department to which you are applying will read your personal statement. Would they want to spend the next couple of years working with you based on your personal statement? Do your research about the school. What are the areas of specialty of this department, and what might it be looking for in a student? Display this knowledge in the essay. This shows that you are genuinely interested in the program you are applying to.
  3. Avoid listing your GPA and resume. It may seem obvious, but the personal statement should be personal. Do not simply repeat what is already on your application package. If you have significant work experiences on your resume, try to focus on one or two particular moments of that work experience, rather than listing your daily tasks. Avoid clichés, but also do not over- exaggerate your stories.
  4. Do some soul searching. Why do you want to attend medical school? What exactly about Yale attracts you? What makes you unique? Think of the task of writing a personal statement as an opportunity to reflect on your accomplishments and to solidify (or reconsider) your decision to enroll in a certain college or grad school.
  5. Write. Proofread. Repeat. This is not an essay you want to write up at the last minute. Make sure your essay has perfect spelling and mechanics. Do not simply rely on spell check to catch your mistakes. Have a few people, preferably a teacher or faculty member proofread your work. Send your essay to education@ahmadiyya.us to have someone on the Taleem Team proofread your essay.
  6. It’s ok to pray about it. The Promised Messiah (as), who wrote than 80 books in three different languages, was well acquainted with writing successful essays. Here is a helpful prayer he would say before writing.

The task of writing a personal statement can seem daunting, but students should take heart—nearly every person who has gone through the college admission process has had to write one. There is a wealth of resources online and within our own Jamaat. Take advantages of these resources and don’t be shy about contacting the Taleem Department for more advice. We are here to help!
