Vladimir Putin nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Epigraph:
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. (Matthew 5:5-9)

President Obama and President Putin

Salon.com: Despite Vladimir Putin’s heinous campaign against “homosexual propaganda,” his role as the main supplier of weapons to Syria’s Bashar Assad, his war against Georgia and his KGB past, the Russian president has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

A Russian activist group known as The International Academy of Spiritual Unity and Cooperation of Peoples of the World nominated Putin because he “actively promotes settlement of all conflicts arising on the planet,” reported the New York Times.

ThinkProgress explains, however, why the nomination might not mean much:

  1. Quoting the Washington Post

Russian President Vladimir Putin was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by an advocacy group that credits him with bringing about a peaceful resolution to the Syrian-U.S. dispute over chemical weapons.
The Russian advocacy group International Academy of Spiritual Unity and Cooperation of Peoples of the World nominated Mr. Putin, characterizing his forged agreement with Syrian President Bashar Assad — to turn over admitted chemical weapons cache to international authorities — a world-class and prize-worthy piece of diplomacy, United Press International reported.

The group also took a dig at the United States.
While announcing the nomination during a press conference in Moscow, group officials said Mr. Putin deserved the Peace Prize much more than President Obama, who won the recognition in 2009.

  2. As I have said in one of my early comments, Nobel Peace prize is now actually given away after White House directives and minutes have been put in; there is almost no chance that Mr. Putin can be awarded for this.
honestly speaking the award should be taken from Obama and given away to Mr. Putin.

I doubt it could be given to Mala-la Yousufzai from Pakistan as it will serve innumerable political purposes of western strategists.

  3. I have not read a lot on President Putin except the highlights in the news. Russia is known for having weapons deal with the Middle Eastern countries and US is on record for selling her surplus of arms and ammunition to the third world countries.

It is obviously a paradoxical situation where on the hand one sells weapons one and on hand preaches peace on the other.

There appears to be credible evidence that Chemical weapon was used to quell the rebels in Syria a pretty gruesome and merciless act for which the person in command must be held responsible and tried in an international court for justice.

To attack the nation with the use of modern firepower and accessories would have been a wrong call as there would possibly be more deaths of innocent people than what was done in the alleged chemical weapon attack.

Given the arms deal and the accompanying paradoxical distaste, Putin stood out in dissuading Obama from what could potentially have been an all-out war on Syria risking serious side effects and indulgence of allies and rebels in the neighborhood.

That situation fraught with potentially a third world crisis in regards to which probably Hazrat Promised Messiah referred to in his poem has been for now been averted.
