The Muslim Youth League will not support or entertain the moves to reduce the legal marriage age of Muslim women to 16, even if the Muslim clerics pitch for it, said Youth League state president P M Sadikhali.
Speaking to reporters in Thrissur on Monday, he flayed the Muslim clerics who were seeking an exemption from legal marriage age of girls in the community by pointing out that the Holy Quran does not mention such specific age limit for marriage. The Youth League will not encourage such discussions.
The controversy over the issue has emerged at an inopportune time and there should be strong opposition to such absurd move by the clerics, which will only help in taking the Muslim society backward, he said.
He admitted that there are some difference of opinions between Youth League and Muslim League over the issue. The BJP and the CPM are trying to create a communal polarisation by raking up a controversy before Parliament election.
