Military intervention in Syria will only deepen crisis, says Arab League chief

Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Araby said on Thursday that the Syrian crisis is the priority concern of the league.Any military intervention in Syria only deepens the tragedy that has passed the limit, he said.Addressing the Economic and Social Council, Araby said the league is closely mointoring the Russian initiative for Syria to place chemical weapons under international supervision. We hope the initiative achieves international consensus at the Geneva II Convention and reaches a political solution for crisis, he said.He pointed out that a solution to the crisis is contingent upon the willingness of the Syrian regime and opposition to sit at the negotiating table, save their country and put an end to the violence that is claiming victims by the day.Any solution should meet aspirations for freedom, democracy, social justice and transition of power, he said, hoping Syria would soon regain its status as a founder of the Arab League. He added that the international community represented by the UN Security Council bears responsibility for this tragedy that threatens the security and stability of the whole region. There is regional and international understanding that only a political solution can save Syria, he said.Edited translation from Al-Masry Al-Youm
