Pope Francis reaches out to Muslims at end of Ramadan

Epigraph: And thou shalt assuredly find those who say, ‘We are Christians,’ to be the nearest of them in love to the believers. That is because amongst them are savants and monks and because they are not proud. (Al Quran 5:83)

Say, ‘O People of the Book! come to a word equal between us and you — that we worship none but Allah, and that we associate no partner with Him, and that some of us take not others for Lords beside Allah.’ But if they turn away, then say, ‘Bear witness that we have submitted to God.’ (Al Quran 3:65)

Pope Francis has urged Christians and Muslims to work together to promote mutual respect, particularly by educating new generations of believers.

He greeted Muslims around the world during his Sunday blessing of pilgrims gathered in St Peter’s Square in Rome.

He said that “our brothers” the Muslims had just concluded their holy month of Ramadan, dedicated to fasting, prayer and alms-giving.

The Pope spoke from his studio window overlooking the square.

The BBC’s David Willey in Rome says Pope Francis, who has made caring for the poor the landmark theme of his pontificate, addressed tens of thousands of pilgrims gathered in scorching summer heat.

  1. So beautiful. I live and work as a teacher in the UAE. The little Arabic children reach out their hands and we make ‘hand burgers’ and they are so warm and trusting as they reach out. When a child is unhappy they come to me and instinctively they are trusting because their parents are trustworthy and also because I have a bit of grey hair and I am like a big uncle. Jesus said ‘ little the little children come to me’. He reached out to children who often show us as adults what we have forgotten.
I’m a Christian and I’m bless’d to work with Arabic people who can only say I uphold their efforts to bring their children up wisely. We need to be unified because this modern world holds out other gods ‘Success’and ‘Material security’ ‘Materialistic well being’. Atheism is growing as with Christians also with Islamic people. These lapsed people have had only a poor dose of what our faiths offer. They are immunized against the real thing, those deep vales. Ramadan is a chance to reassert the deep values. That’s why Pope Francis holds out his hand and tries to build bridges. Organized Religion will one day not be in the ascendancy as they will be weakened by those who have given up living on a treadmill. False freedom will seem more appealing and attractive. They will say I have my SUV a house and I have everything money can buy I have a job my family go on holidays we have it all. Why do I need anything else but what we have achieved by our own efforts? The Gods of Success and Materialism are what we worship. Little Children can show us how simple and effective is the human desire to give out ‘hand burgers’ free of prejudices and short sightednes.
