Jordan remains ‘resilient’ amid regional turbulence — King

AMMAN — Jordan’s security and stability is not a coincidence, but it is the result of the hard work and determination of the Jordanian people, His Majesty King Abdullah said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the US-Jordan Business Alliance meeting held at the Jordanian embassy in Washington, the Monarch said the Kingdom’s security and stability has contributed to make Jordan a destination for businessmen alongside Arab and foreign in1vestors, according to a Royal Court statement.

Jordan, he said, is committed to working with the US to further strengthen and foster bilateral economic and trade relations and help US investors take advantage of the available opportunities in the Kingdom to build a better future for both countries and the Middle East as a whole.

“Our Free Trade Agreement (FTA) holds great potential for both sides. We have witnessed trade increasing almost 10- fold over the last decade,” the King said at the meeting, calling for moving ahead with the alliance’s activities.

Key areas to develop cooperation, he said, include trade, information and communications technology, tourism, manufacturing, energy, water, consulting, education and healthcare.

Noting that times of challenges are also times of opportunity, His Majesty added that Jordan remains “a resilient and tenacious country”, despite the ongoing regional turbulence.

He added that Jordan is “strategically positioned” as a gateway and a natural partner in regional rebuilding efforts, especially with its trained and skillful human resources.

“This gathering and support for the US-Jordan Business Alliance is proof to our long-standing and unique partnership,” the Monarch said.

Referring to Jordan, His Majesty said: “We embraced the Arab Spring as opportunity to forge ahead with reform, which is always work in progress, and achieved critical milestones”.
