Australia will have its first Muslim woman in any parliament when academic Mehreen Faruqi replaces NSW upper house MP Cate Faehrmann this year, the NSW Greens say.
Ms Faehrmann is resigning from NSW politics in June to run for a seat in the Senate.
Dr Faruqi was preselected by the Greens in a postal ballot from among a field of seven women-only candidates, in another first for the party.
The move makes Dr Faruqi the first Muslim woman appointed to any parliament in Australia, the party said.
Dr Faruqi migrated from Pakistan with her family in 1992 and describes herself as an “environmental engineer, climate change and education activist, proud union member and feminist”.
She said she looked forward to fighting for issues such as gender equality, same-sex marriage as well as environmental and transport issues for the Greens.
“As the first Greens MP in NSW from a migrant background, I’m also excited about building stronger relationships between the Greens and migrant communities,” Dr Faruqi said in a statement.

Muslim woman’s gonna fight for same-sex marriage … hmm
Really a happy, very positive news.Congratulations to our respected daughter of Pakistani roots, Mehreen Faruqi Sahiba and wish her great success in her new role/assignment. I hope and wish that as the first female Muslim MP, she proves to be a great MP. And hereby would like to offer helpful tip and suggest that if she gets or seeks solutions of social, moral, economic, political problems in the light of Islamic or Quranic(natural)teachings/guidance on all such pin-pointed local, national or international issues, She will be making a positively permanent up-lifting impact on the soil and society of her beautiful adopted motherland Australia. God willing, InshaAllah.
So Australia follows the footsteps of UK and Norway….discriminatory appointing a female to show soft image of government policies which deep inside are contrary……….they know a female will always be obedient, yes-sir colleague and wont be protesting effectively on ongoing situations.
