Abdus Salam-Pride of the Muslim ummah: President Morsi of Egypt

COMMENT: Pride of the Muslim ummah —Yasser Latif Hamdani

Logically, a free, fair and impartial judiciary, unmoved by religious passion or pressure should be able to strike down the notorious and illogical Ordinance XX of 1984

On a recent visit to Islamabad, President of Egypt Muhammad Morsi made a statement that should have startled our ideologues and guardians of Islam in Pakistan. Paying a tribute to Dr Abdus Salam, the Islamist president of Egypt declared that the great physicist was a source of pride for the entire Muslim ummah. Years ago, our mullahs had desecrated the grave of this great man because his tombstone read ‘the first Muslim Nobel Laureate’.

Dr Salam was one of those rare Pakistanis who continued to remain loyal to his country even after experiencing persecution of the worst kind. His speech at the Nobel Prize ceremony is a testament to this. So is his refusal to accept overtures by both Jawaharlal Nehru in the 1960s and later Indira Gandhi. Compare Dr Salam’s commitment to Pakistan to the commitment of our self-styled savior, Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, who confessed to trading nuclear secrets for money. One can safely say that had he been in place of Dr Salam, Dr Khan would have sold his soul and any nuclear secrets he possessed to the highest bidder, including India.

  1. Yasser Hamdani sahib has written very well. There is good chance for the Judiciary to come upto the expectations of the law abiding citizens of the world to strike down the bad laws enacted in 1974 and 1984 in Pakistan.

In old times, a law used to be effective in the life time of a king or ruler (Say King Soloman a.s. or Khusro Pervaiz of Persia). But the bad law made by Bhutto and Zia is active even after their death.

The Judiciary should not wait for the assembly members to do any good thing. The honorable Judges should act and remove the mistakes in the law which they find against the spirit of the constitution. By the Grace of Allah, the name of the Judges will be remembered in the world for very long time.

  2. I agree with the comments well presented by Gulam Sawyer Sahib. If Pakintani judiciary would not take initiative as the SC Chief Justic takes notice to many other improper acts of government (ZULAM) and atrocities quite often, then the history would be written differently.
Let’s not wait for the Justice brought down to the mullahs and to their accomplices by Allah Almighty.
Allah may save our Pakistan from the evil designs of the internal and external enimies.

  3. The National University of Science And Technology (NUST)Islamabad was established by Dr. Salam and after his passing away from this mundane world, the NUST was renamed by the government as ‘The Abdus Salam University of Science & Technology.’ After sometimes the intolerant, illiterate, closed-minded Mullah was able to get Dr. Salam’s name erased/removed from the NUST, the prestigious institution the Nobel prized Physicist had established. And the local administration of Jhang district earned the honor of ‘erasing’ the word, ‘Muslim’ from the marble stone of Dr. Salam’s last resting place, his grave at ‘Bahishti Maqbara’in Rabwah.Innalillah….
