The share of people at risk of poverty in the population stood at 15.8 percent in Germany — or just over one in six — compared with an EU average of 16.9 percent, Destatis said in a statement. A person is defined as being at risk of poverty if their income is less than 60 percent of the median income for the population as a whole, the statisticians explained.
In Germany, that corresponded to a single person’s annual income of €11,426 ($14,616) or €952 per month in 2010, Destatis said.
