The Sultan of Malaysia’s Selangor state has decreed that non-Muslims in the region have been barred from using the word “Allah”, saying it is a sacred word exclusive to Muslims.

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had expressed shock and regret over opposition DAP party’s Secretary General Lim Guan Eng’s recent remarks urging the Malaysian government to allow the word “Allah” to be used in the Malay version of the Bible, a statement from Selangor Islamic Affairs Council Secretary Mohd Misri Idris said yesterday.

Lim, who is the Penang state Chief Minister, had made the remarks in his New Year message.

“The Sultan made a decision and decreed that the word Allah is a sacred word specific to Muslims and it is prohibited to be used by any non-Muslim in Selangor, as stated in a ‘fatwa’ and gazetted on February 18, 2010,” Mohd Misri said.

He said the Sultan had stated that stern action could be taken against anyone who questioned the ‘fatwa’ that was issued according to state laws.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said Sultan Sharafuddin had every right, as head of the State’s Islamic affairs, to issue the decree.

The Muslim Times’ Chief Editor’s comments

We, in the Muslim Times stand for the religious freedom for everyone.  I suggest that the Christians can start using web-based version of the Bible to demonstrate the small mindedness of the Sultan to the whole world.

They should host their Bible, with the world ‘Allah,’ free of charge in the Muslim Times, until the Sultan begins to respect the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights.

  1. Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajioon. May God guide the Muslims to right path. Virtually they are providing evidence that need of “Mahdi” is there.

  2. Completely insane man this Malaysian Sultan is and his nonsense viewpoint!

What if in return Christian nations put a ban on Muslims not to portray Jesus AS as their prophet because he is specific figure to their belief?

I do not understand when UN and other human rights champions will take actions on extreme violations of basic human rights in all over the world?

  3. It shows clear ignorance of the Malaysian Islamic council. All the Christians in the Arab states had been using the word Allah for God for a very long time.

It was unnecessary fatwa (edict) of the Islamic council of Malaya. Inna Lillah e Wa Inna Ilahaihe Rajioon. Astaghfirullah Rabbi…

That is why hazrat Ibraheem a.s. settled his son Ishmael a.s. in the wilderness of Arabia, far away from the Kings and councils.
It is another proof that religion should be left alone, separate from any political power.

Does the Islamic council of Malaya want to prove that Allah is the God of Muslims only ?? How bad of that council!! Every one should condemn that anti-Islamic act. Let us hope that some superior faculty of some Islamic Center of learning will issue a better edict (fatwa) in this matter soon.

  4. Allah is the Rabb, the Rehman, the Raheem and the Maalik. (Chapter 1 of Quran).
As Rabb, Allah is the creator, maintainer, sustainer of everything, all living or dead, material or abstract, bodies or souls, ideas, diseases, planets, galaxies, animals, plants, theories. Everything.

As Rehman, Allah is merciful for all living things. That includes all animals, all mankind, believers or disbelievers, atheists, donkeys, birds, all,, benefit from the mercy of Allah. Remember that all of them benefit from the attribute Rabb already.

As Raheem, Allah is merciful to the believers i.e. All mankind who believe in Allah and pray to Him and do good deeds, benefit from this attribute of Allah. Atheists may not be included here. All believers of any faith are benefited, Muslims, Hindus, Christians, Sikhs. They are already getting benefit from the attribute Rabb and Rehman. It concerns believing mankind only.

As Maalik, Allah is Master of the judgment, may reward whomsoever He wills, in whatever way He likes. It is assumed that this attribute is a very special one and concerns very high level believers, i.e. prophets, messengers, martyrs and very faithful persons (Super mankind only).

In light of the above, Allah is Universal. Allah is not the God or provider for the Muslims only. Please reflect on these points and help all mankind to come towards (closer to) Allah, not away from Allah.

  5. Pls type in youtube channel title Kalimah Allah:Allah vs God, pls give your comments in that channel.

  6. Are we guilty of religious polarization? What is Malaysia coming to? Islamic state? If non-Muslims cannot use the term ‘Allah’ are we saying all non-Muslim police staff must resign immediately? That is because the police emblem has ‘Allah’ in it. Are we saying Muslims must not use the Mosques and the roads leading to the Mosques anymore. Because the Mosques and the roads leading to the Mosques are built by non-Muslims workers. Are we saying we cannot touch money anymore because the money has gone through the pork market, used in prostituting, alcohol drinking and gambling?
