The year is 1492, the
year of the discovery of America, the year when Granada, the last Muslim state in Al-Andalus (Spain), fell to the Christian re-conquest. In the great Spanish cathedral-mosque of Seville, four allegorical figures hold aloft the coffin of Christopher Columbus. They represent the then four kingdoms of Spain. The lance held by the kingdom of Castille bears a cross at one end and its sharpened edge pierces through a pomegranate. The pomegranate is referred to as Granada in the Spanish language.
