THE University of Fiji celebrated a milestone yesterday when its first batch of law graduateswas admitted to the Bar at the High Court in Suva.

In his address to the 12 new lawyers, Chief Justice Anthony Gates said as newcomers to the legal fraternity the graduates were expected to demonstrate that they had nothing lacking in skills and knowledge.

“I know that you have all worked very hard and shown enthusiasm as pioneers,” Chief Justice Gates said.

“The University, the Honorary Dean, the lecturers and staff all are to be congratulated for having advised and directed you to this final goal.

“I hope none of you will let down your university colleagues by any loss of standards over the years.”

Chief Justice Gates used the milestone event to reiterate to the new lawyers a message he relayed in similar circumstances last week.

“You will not become a legend on the Bar in your first year. But you could start by gaining respect and appreciation, by making yourself useful in your office wherever you may begin in carrying out humble tasks,” he said.

Speaking to The Fiji Times, University of Fiji School of Law dean Devendra Pathik said the law faculty established in 2008 had come a long way.

“The fact that students have obtained their degrees and are fulfilling the requirements of the board of education is ample proof of the standard of education being given to students,” he said.

Mr Pathik said the 200 student strong University of Fiji School of Law was very proud to see the students reap the fruits of their hard labour.
