Mahendra Chaudhry who faces several criminal charges is a former and first elected Indian Prime Minister of Fiji whose government was toppled by a breakaway party (rebels) from within the Fiji Military in 2000. A radical George Spieght had speared headed the coup from outside who is imprisoned for life.
The next government that followed led by Laisenia Qarase proposed to pardon and set free George Speight. This and other allegation against Qarase prompted Fiji Military to intervene and dismiss Laisenia Qarase government. Qarase faces several corruption charges as his trial continues in Fiji High court this week.
