In what was possibly the first protest of its kind, a religious organisation was met with aerial firing by the police in Karachi, when they gathered to demonstrate against the shutdown of a Shia watchdog website.
The Shia Action Committee was protesting the alleged ban of the website http://www.shiakilling.com, when they were stopped at downtown Karachi’s Numaish Chowrangi, DawnNews reported on Tuesday.
The protestors, who were reportedly in hundreds, set off from Shah-i-Khurasan area (Jamshed Town), chanting anti-government slogans on their way. When they reached Numaish Chowrangi, police tried to stop them, which led to an altercation between both parties. Police officials then resort to aerial firing. While the crowd dispersed to the nearby alleyways, some still managed to move past Numaish and continued with their agitation.
A website, which monitors and maintains a “death count” of Pakistani Shia Muslims targeted in sectarian violence, has been banned by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, which operates on the directives of the Ministry of Information. Upon attempting to access the website, users are met with a “Access denied” message, a usual occurrence for banned websites.

Why not ban wahabi/salafi websites then? Why not block twitter and facebook accounts of militant wahabis operating from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Kashmir? What harm Ahmadis and Shias have done to Pakistan? What good does these sunni wahabis have done for Pakistan?
This in nothing but politicizing of Religion. The foundation laid by Gen.Zia-ul-Haq to promote only one sect ideology and banning all others and denying the teaching of Qur’an ” Al Iqrah Fi Din “. The true teaching of Islam gives a freedom of Faith.Article 20 of Pakistan Law and UNO charter safe guard the basic human rights but the theocratic mentality of the dominating groups in Pakistan promoting Fundamentalism and in return getting Terrorism plus Isolation from all the world.
First it was Ahmadis, now it is Shia’s turn. Who will be the next? One ill-advised move of 1974 under the demands of Mullah has unnerved the country into sectarianism. It is time for Pakistan government to pay attention to EU, UNO and other Human Rights NGOs to bring an amendment in the Constitution to confiscate the contradictions in the constitution. Article 20 gives lot of freedom to its citizens whereas Ordinance XX takes it all away. Ziaul Haq is no more there so get rid of his ordinance bearing his thinking as well. The killing of Shia Community must get stopped ASAP. This nation can’t afford have any sort of sectarianism once Baluchistan problem is on its peak.
