:Friday, November 18, 2011-world-brief-A-F-PA Bangladeshi man who held his wedding at the auspicious moment of 11.11 am on November 11 had his hopes of a long and happy life with his wife dashed when she left him minutes after the ceremony.
Shawkat Khan said that he did not know why his new bride walked out, but Farzana Yasmin, 27, said she was angered by a demand from his family for dowry gifts including a fridge and a television.
“To make the occasion special, I even published pricey cards, inviting friends and relatives to join the wedding,” Mr Khan, 32, said, explaining the event was timed to be held 11:11 on 11/11/11.
Mr Khan, a school headteacher, added he had believed 11 to be his lucky number.
Editor’s Note:
Islam protected the economic status of woman by requiring a husband to give her a dowary at the time of marriage. This becomes part of her exclusive wealth, and her husband has no right over it, unless she wishes to share it with him. The Holy Qur’an states:
“And give the women their dowries willingly. But if they, of their own pleasure remit to you a part thereof, then enjoy it as something wholesome and pleasant.” (4:5)
Interestingly, this is addressed not only to the husband but also the woman’s relatives. They have no right over it. The common practice found in some Islamic countries today where the groom demands that his bride bring a dowary of gold and household items to the marriage is totally un-Islamic.
Such incidents happen when Islamic teachings are ignored. Make the Quran you guide in every matter to gain success and progress.
