MPs, deputy ministers to ‘slam dunk’ at basketball final

KUALA LUMPUR: The finals of the HSB-KLBA Basketball Championship on Wednesday will be a historic ‘slam dunk’ of sorts.

For the first time, four members of parliament (MP), including two deputy ministers, will square off at the championship held at the Malaysian Basketball Association (Maba) Stadium in Jalan Hang Jebat here.

The ‘thrilla’ begins at 7.30pm.

In a joint statement, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Gan Ping Sieu, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and Hulu Selangor MP P. Kamalanathan said the event was a prelude or ‘warm-up’ to the #YBsCanJump Basketball Tournament to be held on Nov 19.

The tournament, launched on Oct 9 by Saifuddin, was aimed at promoting basketball at the grassroots-level and across ethnic lines.

“We will be playing with and against several national players, as well as Maba office-bearers during half-time of the finals,” they said.

The young political leaders also said the #YBsCanJump originated from Twitter, where they first mooted the idea of a 3-on-3 basketball match.
