Major Step Forward for Waste Dumping Ban
More than 170 countries have agreed to fast-track the implementation of a ban on the export of hazardous and toxic waste to developing countries, thanks to an Indonesia Swiss initiative.
The agreement on the early entry into force of the proposal, which is an amendment to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, was reached at the 10th Conference of the Parties of the Basel Convention in Cartagena, Colombia, last Friday.
The Basel Action Network, a nongovernmental organization that has long pushed for ratification of the amendment, stated in a press release that the agreement marked “a major breakthrough decision.”
