When Kat Banyard held her first feminist event in 2004, she spent months struggling to attract 90 people. For this year’s event, which will take place in Birmingham next weekend, 200 had signed up within 24 hours of it being announced.

I had the honor to attend an event in New York with Sir Mohammed Zafrullah Khan. He was giving a lecture organized by the Sunday Times. Before the lecture there was a small ‘get-together’. (Sir Mohammed Zafrullah Khan got a glass of hot milk with honey to help him during the long speech). As usual ‘in the West’ soon Choudhary Sahib was ‘attacked’ by the wife of the Sunday Times Editor. She was saying ‘here in the United States we ladies have equality’. Choudhary Sahib listened and after some time asked her if she had any children. Like any proud mother she told that she had 3 and gave some details. After listening to her Choudhary Sahib said: “Madame, please now tell your husband to have the next 3 children”. After an astonished silence Choudhary Sahib explained that Muslims belief in equality of status, but equality of function can never be achieved. He illustrated it with verses of the Holy Quran. As usual of course the listeners were very much impressed.
