Yup u are rite… we Muslims have made our religion with fairy tales story.. No one understand it deeply.. they take it literrally as they take the quran and other holy books literally. According to me This journey happend in the mind. When he was sleeping. Our Mind has seven levels.(Scientifically Proved.) We can enter our mind through dreams.. and when we enter our mind time slows down because it does not bear the time and space concept. it is free from it. May be He was dreaming. In the first level of Mind during dream He met Adam and joseph, Pau and Jesus as his Subconcious and in the 2nd level he must have met other prophets.. There is now where in Quran that He met God. God has no shape. He is just something else that i am trying to find out…..
Miraj as a ‘dream’ I think gives the wrong impression. I suppose ‘vision’ would come closer. May be even ‘out-of-body-experience’? (Not only holy persons have those experiences… there are many experiences of that kind).

See the five volume commentary on the verses of the Holy Quran from Sura Bani Israel, chapter number 17, on the issue of Miraj (A spiritual journey):
